2011 GMC Sierra took a dump.

    The short version.

2011 GMC Sierra 2500 diesel bought November of 2010.

Truck has been great since then, 15000 miles and has been bulletproof.

Got a GM recall notice to have the DEF system recalibrated to prevent freezing, so I took it in.

20 minutes after I left the dealer I got a "Low Coolant" warning. Got home and checked the tank, it was full to the top.

Dealer was closed for Christmas, so I figured take it in after the holiday. When I tried to start it 2 days later, the batteries were absolutely dead. Couldn't even light the interior lights.

Got the truck started, took it to the dealer, they said a sensor was bad in the coolant tank. They replaced it, pulled the codes for the battery failure and they told me it was on "open circut" that no longer existed. They said they pressure checked the coolant system and all was fine.

Left the dealer and 20 miles down the road, got another "Low Coolant" warning. Called and made another appointment.

The electrical gremlins started again. No remote start, no remote door locks, "Trailer brake system failure" warning, etc. Took it in and the dealer said a hairline crack in the surge tank (GM has a TSB out) They ordered one and I brought the truck back in to have it replaced 3 days later.

Dealer said system was pressure checked, electrical diagnostics were run, recall code was reflashed and the truck was good to go.

Left the dealer, 20 miles down the road got a "Low Coolant" again. Got home and there was coolant all over the front quarter and inside the engine compartment. Coolant was running out from under the front.

Took it back to the dealer, again, and when I started it there was a big belch of white smoke and the truck ran like crap until it warmed up. Dropped the truck off and my wife and I went to breakfast (dealer said 30 minute repair). My phone rings and it's the dealer, blown head gasket.

Total so far, over 100 hours of repair time done and coming up. Truck has been down for a month, 5 times in the shop. All since the day before Christmas Eve.

Got off the phone with the dealer a couple of hours ago. 57 hours projected repair time.

My first General Motors product. 1 year old, 15,000 easy miles, completely stock as the day I picked it up

Unbelievable, just need to vent out.

I guess every manufacturer has the occasional bad one get out the door. Hope it turns out well for you. Maybe they'll give you a really cool loaner

Be glad you're under warranty. As a diesel mechanic (larger engines) I can tell you blown head gaskets can be symptoms of a deeper issue, they rarely fail on their own. Document everything from this point forward and insist things be put in writing. Don't take anyones "word". Be firm without being a dick. Give them a fair chance to make it right, only go above their heads if they start jerking you around. Good luck.

I thought you said this was the short version!

Seriously though, that is tough. Hope your dealership makes things right. Could have happened to any manufactured vehicle.

As a GMC dealer, that is the first I have heard of it. They are solid trucks. Your dealer may be at fault too. Check with the state you live in and begin the Lemon law process. You will get back every nickel you spent.......

That sucks, I hope they get it squared away for you right off. GM makes a dang nice truck, that's a lot of money on a truck to have issues. I don't blame you for venting.

NC laws says 3 repairs (got that)

Followed by a final repair attempt after you notify the Manufacturer. Have to get it back first and see if it's fixed.

GM is involved, the have assigned me a district customer service person that contacts me daily. But, the communication between them and the dealer has been horrible so far.

I have a 2012 Sierra 1500 with a Powertech Package as a loaner. I think it has the 6.2 in it, I haven't looked. Just know it will pass anything but a gas station.

I'm documenting everything, been down this road with an 04 F-150 that was lemoned.

My cousin builds these motors here @ d max in Ohio and strongly discouraged my Father in law from purchasing a 2011 hd d - max.
He did anyway and has been problem free so far (but he hates the fuel mileage)
There was a problem that affected so many of these engines . I just picked up a 2010 ( Father in law owns a scrap yard) that lost oil pressure and blew the engine.
There was a reason she waited until this year to buy her own D max.

From your story it sounds like a dealer fault doing the DEF system recalibration recall service. Sucks anyway you look at it because its just one more thing in your life to deal with. I hate the BS stuff.

I understand that all vehicles can have problems but I wouldn't want that truck back after having a blown head gasket at 15,000 miles. I would at least push for a new complete motor.
I hope you get it worked out.
