    Engine hard to start

    2007 Yamaha hpdI 225
After many starts and stops while fishing a tournament I came in to the weigh in , we had to wait i sat out in the water with my motor running for a while then shut it off every once in a while i had to restare it . every once in a while it would turn over but would not start unless i stepped on the excellat to the the floor. once in gear it ran fine. This motor has 184 hrs on it the plugs were done once at about 100 hrs and these plugs don't look that bad . I'm going to change them and the fuel filter in the boat . vst filter has never been done. the fuel filter on the motor was done once any help would be appreciated

    Thanks Tom L

I doubt very much it's a filter problem. There are 3 filters on that engine. Intermittent issues are the hardest to diagnose, and you say the engine runs great, just hard to start every once in a while. By opening the throttle you are adding air to the engine and moving the TPS, which probably is of no help. Adding air might indicate the engine is rich, so check your low pressure lift pumps for leaking diaphragms.

    Thanks Charlie
The motor is still under warrant but if i bring it in. were it is and intermitten problem it won't happen for them and they will find all kind of things to change and I'll still have the same problem when i go out on the water I'm think of ordering the Two lift pumps and just changing them . looking at the lift pumps there is two screws and two Eleen screws on the bottom I'm guessing you take the bottom ones out and it comes off the wall and the other two Philip's screws hold the pump together. once i get the pumps I'll know better . how do you ck for leaks .

The screws on the edges hold the pumps together, the 2 bolts or screws in the middle hold the pumps to the block. Loosen only the bolts that hold the pumps to the block, pull them away from the block breaking the gasket seal, and then pump the fuel bulb up real tight. No fuel should escape the pump housings, if any does the pump is bad. Its real easy. You may have to loosen the VST mounting bolts to get to the left pump. Don't order pumps without checking, you may be wasting money. There are other things that could be causing the problem, this is just a very common deal on these engines and you start with the simple stuff. If they're not leaking, take it to a dealer, that's what warranty is for.

    Those gaskets are generally reusable.

    Thanks Charlie
The only reason i don't want to go to the dealer is it's a 2 hr ride one ways and they will properly want to change all the filters plus and I'll end up with a 500.00 bill if i can fix it my self i learned something and saved myself ad least
100.00 in gas. i changed the plugs and have to change the filter in the boat and I'll try that. the bottom plugs look like crap the top plugs were clean i know it only runs on 4 when it is idling top or bottom ?

Well I just got time to take off my lift pumps I pumped the fuel ball up tight with no leaks so I'm guessing there alright the only thing is putting the vst tank back on, the washers kept falling off but I Finally put a little grease on them
and it helped it would've been a little easier if I put a rag and the washers wouldn't fallen to the bottom and tipping the motor up helps it's to bad I didn't Figure this out before I started ha'' ha'' . I changed the plugs and fuel water separator in the boat I don't know when I'm going to get out the weather is changing . I probably should put it in the lake down the street just to make sure I put everything back the way it goes.
Maybe this will help someone else out there that is going to attempt this .
    Thx Charlie 206
