    Bypass my VRO?

I've got a 2000 175 Johnson (J175PLSS) and I'm thinking of bypassing my VRO, since a few buddies of mine have blown their Johnson's up because the VRO quit on them! They both had older model Johnson's, a 1997 and 1998, but their VRO quit on them after 6 years! I had read threw Bass & Walleye Mag. that they upgraded the VRO system since then? but do I have it on my model? Mine will be 6 years old this year, and I don't want a blown motor! they both said they had no warning, buzzer, no nut'in when the motor went! I always carry an extra gallon of oil with me on the boat just in case, but what good does that do if you don't get any kind of warning! Is it time for me to bypass my VRO? What do you guys think?

I premix my oil and gas but the experts will say that a new OMS pump would be the ticket. There is an article that explains the VRO in detail.

IF you have a motor where you mix the gas and oil manually, just imagine what the insides would look like if you forgot to add oil and ran the motor. Every piston and cylinder would be deeply scored and probably froze up. All the ball and roller bearings would be "blued", flattened and the crankshaft would be totaled. The engine would not be rebuildable due to the extensive damage from lack of lube.

Now what damage was done to your "buddies' " engines? Was it just one cylinder or piston bad? Chances are that's all it was and the "mechanic" blamed it on the VRO. Because it was NOT a VRO problem, the warning horn did not beep.

    Does this sound familiar????

I have heard more than my share of"horror stories about the vro giving it up and blew # ? cylinder. That's the first thing I ask em SeaHorse....Only one cylinder???? Guys OMC_BRP has the best oiling system out there, with exception to some 40 hp engines. Read the link SeaHorse put up!!!

My money is the engines died from lack of maintenance, carbon build up or lean out. Seahorse is right here, no doubt about it!!!

You may also enjoy reading another article about automatic oiling systems. This article describes the OMC/Bombardier and Mercury systems in great detail, and compares and contrasts the methods used.

I am afraid it is too long to ever appear in a magazine, but if you want a very thorough description, it may help you:
