I said I'd never do it, But.......

We just bought a 2010 Nissian Altima, I said I'd never buy a 'rice burner'
but I'm tired of dumping alot of gas thru our GMC Canyon, I'm sure this Altima will get nearly double the gas mileage
This is the first 'car' I've driven in know telling how long, just hope its a good one

That Canyon was a great truck, but between filling it up every week and filling my fullsize up every 2 weeks it was starting to get a little deep in my pocket
If I can get in the 20's for mpg I'll be thrilled

A quick search shows it to score well in reliabilty ratings. Reliability is key for me.

Honestly, the Altima is a great vehicle. My wife has had one now for 8 years. It looks and runs like the day she got it. Good luck with your purchase. Remember, buying a new vehicle, be it any make, still supports American jobs. The dealership, the sales manager, the salesman, the service dept, the lot boy, etc still are employed partly by your decision. Good for you!

Nissan makes a pretty fabulous car. You won't be disappointed.

We had one around here for a company car before the Avalon. It was a solid 30MPG car on the road. If you follow Nissan's suggested maintenance schedule it'll get expensive unless you do it yourself or let it ride until it breaks.

You will understand why people "buy rice burners" and have a whole new view.

I said the same then bought a Honda and a Toyota not a single problem with either and both are long paid off.

Ignore the timing belt til it breaks and you'll be swapping the engine. Nissan makes interference engines (valves collide with pistons if the belt goes).

Please don't ignore the maintenance. At least leave something worth buying to the person picking it up on the used market.

Re: I said I'd never do it, But....... (tnjavelin)

We only had that one a year or so...maybe 40K miles. One headlight was never hooked up at the factory, you have to take a wheel off and go through the wheel well after you take the liner out to get at the backs of the lights. Five trips to three dealers finally figured out the reason the windshield washers would work was the tubes were to long and were pinching when you shut the hood.

I want to say the 15K service was 300ish. Nissan suggested maintenance is expensive at the dealer...actually every foreign brand I've had is compared to my domestic brands. MOST ignore that maintenance or do it theirself.

The Altima was noisy, I hated the CVT transmission but hey it was part of her pay and it beat the hell out of putting all those miles on our stuff for a change. The Avalon has had its share of nit picky problems and goes in for it's 15K service next week. They have a couple others in the fleet but the old man is pretty set on buying something that supports jobs in the south (where most of his business is). The original company Avalon is pushing 300K and still in service, several have over 100K. A couple of the Altimas have over 100K and look to run at least 250K.

Re: I said I'd never do it, But....... (SOONER*REDNECK)

My fiancee picked up an 09 Nissan with low milage(27000) 10 months ago. Great cars, its nice to have one car in the house that doesnt eat fuel.

Everyone is slow and looking to oversell services from carpenters down to the auto dealers. Make sure the dealer doesnt try to whack you with add ons when you go in for scheduled maintenance. The last time in for an oil change I was busy and didnt go with her. They claimed they needed to do 500 dollars in adjustments to a car they sold her 5000 miles before after all the alleged adjustments were already done. She didnt bite and the girl at the cashiers desk basically confessed in embarassment.

You could of still bought a American car that gets in the mid 30's for gas mileage...... I laugh when I see a Foriegn cars with a Veterans lic plate or with the American flag stickers on them.... is that going against what they fought for???????

Nope, going against what was fought for is the "supposed" american car companies shipping most of their jobs out of the country. Toyota for me. My Tacoma has 337,000 and barely touched it.
Original engine. It may die today but has been a great vehicle. I owned 3 "american" made vehicles before the toyota, none of them could even begin to compare to the "rice burner".

We serve for Americas freedom. I have a retred Vet plate on a Chevy made in Mexico (pre bailout) along with a couple of Toyota products.

I laugh when I get a pension check knowing it was borrowed from China, Japan, and the Middle East while I pay EVERYTHING I make in pension, disability, and working back in federal taxes because my old employer cant balance a check book.

That vehicle has a timing chain if I am not mistaken.

Re: I said I'd never do it, But....... (09Z7SC)

I"ve had chevys all my life and have always had pretty good luck with them.
I just hope I have good luck with this car too.
As far as dealers sticking you with "extras" when its in for maintence, the GM dealer here trys that with my wife too, she"ll take the truck in for a oil change and they ALWAYS try to push some other crap on her.
I always do the maintence with exception of the oil change because they change it for what it would cost me to do it. All the other stuff I do myself
