    2000 Johnson 225 HP - Ignition Issues

    J225HGLSSC Year 2000 Johnson HO 225 HP...

Symptoms: starts up no problem, when I go to drop the throttle it will fall on it won't get enough power, motor shakes, etc....

With motor running, pulled plugs... no change in motor function when #2 cylinder plug wire pulled.

Did some switching of coils, wires, etc... to see if problem followed coils... did not.

Assumed power pack was bad... brought to mechanic.

He went through all the stator, rectifier, blah blah blah tests just to tell me he thought it was a bad power pack. (ordered OMC power pack 0586661 (superceeds the original 056212)).

Put it in... got spark... problem fixed. Went out this Saturday, motor started right up... went to drop the hammer... can't get up on plane (same bad performance).

    Took to mechanic...

Found # 2 cylinder is still not getting spark.

Here is what else we noticed... that cylinder gets spark on start up until the engine RPM's drop (ie. warmed up)... once warmed up no spark. And raising the idle/warm up bar doesn't induce any more spark.

The mechanic has been through it and says that all electronic parts are checking out per OMC specs... nothing is giving bad readings.

He thinks I have now fried a second power pack... and is recommending that I change the coil, temp sensor, and buy a new power pack. HOLY S&&&

Any body have any thoughts? What else could be missed or what tests should be done!

Can't afford to keep putting power packs in this thing and don't want to drive around idling!!

    Thanks!

Welcome to the board. I'd look real hard at changing the timer base.

I would tell him to put the test wheel on, back in down the ramp, put the tining light on it and see if the mark jumps around erractically.... which would point back to what Championman said

Spoke with the mechanic and he had gone through the timing base and said there is no jumping.

Is #2 the only one that loses?> I think I would look hard at the shift interupt switch as well.....

Yes... it is only number 2 that is losing spark (and only after the RPM's drop from start up of around 1000 to 800 (warm up))...

Switched the coils, wires, plugs and it doesn't follow it. Stays right at #2 even after putting in a new OEM power pack.

Id do the ChampoiNman sugestion. Sounds like the timer base is firing fine in quickstart, losing it after warm up. The timerbase is the likely candidate here!Whoop Whoop Whoop, Go ChampioNman, Go ChampioNman Sorry, had a good day today!!

    WAY TO GO GUYS!!!

The mechanic decided to replace the timer base because I was riding him after getting your opinions...

Well picked the boat up yesterday evening, dumped it in the water and she jumps out of the hole like she used to!

The mechanic is dumbfounded because he checked the "old" timer base and it meets all specs? Any ideas, or is this just "one of those things"?

Regardless the boat is up and running.

    THANKS!!!

PS: being that I replaced the power pack 056212 what are the odds that the original power pack is still worth hanging onto as a back up?? (ie. still works?)
