I always have a trailer hook when fishing spinner bait. Does anyone ever not put a trailer on? And what situation would you not use trailer?

I have fished without one when the fish were holding in some flooded bushes/timber and the trailer kept getting hung up
never use them. they always seem to kill the action of the bait to me...if youre getting ' short strikes' trim your skirt and run it a bit slower....jmho![]()

+1 they seem to get hung up in the grass alot more with a trailer hook.

Just curious - is it because some guys place the keeper tubing over the trailer hook eye, then poke the spinnerbait main hook through the keeper tubing ? I could see where this would cause a trailer hook to run off center affecting the action.
I always put the trailer hook on, then placed a chunk of tubing on afterwards. This allows the trailer to swing free and self center.
Maybe I'm missing something altogether, I'm not that much of a spinnerbait guy.
Ranting incoherently
Never use them unless there is a reason and I swear I get less bites with one especially on brown fish, if I do use one it is the small KVD one by strike king.

Always use them. Short strikes and misses aren't fun to me

I use them, but most of the time, the fish is hooked on the main hook.
I prefer a spinnerbait with a long shank hook so there is no need for a trailer hook.

+1 Those are great trailer hooks. I use one probably 90% of the time and have landed some real nice ones that were on the trailer hook.

Always use one here. I dont slow roll spinnerbaits, or fish them slow at any time. If I'm using one, im smoking that sucker under the surface looking for a reaction bite up shallow around junk in the water. I also never use a trailer (plastic).

Rarely if in heavy timber I may remove them. Or if I am using a hulugrub as a trailer and they are just tearing them up and its a pain to keep removing and replacing the trailer hook.
Don't use one on 1/4 oz or less, but everything else gets one. Caught too many on the trailer hook.![]()

if youre going to use a trailer hook, this is the best way to rig it...the trouble is, with it swinging free, it seems to snag everything in sight..including your finger![]()
ive simply caught too many fish on the main hook , even when using a trailer..when they want it- they want it....
one thing to consider, you actually have to let the fish 'suck in ' a spinnerbait, ( kind of like a crankbait) to insure a good hookup...snatching on the first feel is a sure way to miss em....![]()
I'll jump in with the never use them crowd. If I'm fishing a spinnerbait, I'm fishing in cover and the fish are looking up and I want to get as close to the cover...usually tree stumps in my case, and I don't want an extra hook fowling things up...and if they are hitting a spinnerbait, they'll get it on the single hook. Short-strikers tell you a different story.
If the water is wide open then I'd throw something with more hooks on it like a trap or a crankbait.
Don't worry Ma'am....
