IMHO this practice might help curb disruptive students

The problem is these rooms werent used for "disruptive" students. They were used to place kids with special needs when they were having a melt down and left alone in these rooms. These kids were not monitored while in the rooms and these rooms are about the size of a coat closet.

much ado about nothing ... they want to put kids in a "time out" instead of a spanking .. now they just put a door on it

So, what are they supposed to do with them when they melt down?
I'm not being a smart ass or advocating the rooms, I'm just curious.

I miss the old days. When I was a kid and someone disrupted the class and would not mind the teacher. We went to the Principals office. We got or butt busted and went back to class where we sat quietly for the rest of the day. EVERYONE NEEDS to learn there are consequences for their actions. Besides if little Johnny is dumb enough to bounce his head off a brick wall because he is a brat, he will soon learn not to do that. I can honestly say when I was in school no one suffered perminate damage from disipline and we sure didnt have the problems in school that there are today.

It'll be amended a couple times by then and be up to over 200k pages.

As a Parent of an Autistic Child (Aspergers) I can understand fully what the Teachers are experienceing with "Melt Downs". However to place a child in a room by themsleves will do nothing in teaching that child how to cope with it, only enhance there experience of it. Sometimes they will find patterns in it & rely on having melt downs to get what they want to avoid doing the things they should be doing in class. (there not stupid)

This again falls back on the parents, and being involved with that students activities at school. There is so much YOU CAN do that you shoudl never fidn yourslef saying that you can't. Having IEP meeeting and collaborating with the schools Coordinators and resrouces department is about the best way to find a commen way to deal with situaiton liek this.

but in recoarse to this I can see that under some circumstances, this may be the only way they can deal with things liek this if they dont have the Resources or the Backing from the Comunity to help bring in better people or allow a better way to handle it.

In the end its a catch 22. Parent's don't like the way some schools do things, but they dont want to do anything about it. They sure don't want tax dollars to go towards seomthing better but yet they will complain about what the current system is doing.......and nothing more will come from any other parents cause they don't give a crap.

    You want change............................GET INVOLVED.........DO SOMETHING!!!!!

    Re: (R.D.)

I have had dealings with all types of special needs children in my 38 years as a teacher/administrator. What Ryan says is right on. I get so sick of hearing schools bad mouthed for this or that by some parents, when they will not, for whatever reason, get involved. With special needs kids, the IEP and or the case conference is very important. It sets the stage for the proper way to deal with each student.

    Re: (billius)

I will say this, we are not one of the parents that are not involved in our school. We actually have a meeting with our son's team tomorrow. Lucky for us, this is not our school.

As for the person who asked what to do at the moment, there are other options than just locking them unattended in a room. At the moment, remove the child to another class room that is not in use, call either the Special Education teacher or School Psycologist (sp), if they can not calm the child, then you call the parents to come get the child.

there are a lot more "Tools" they can use as well. Weighted vest, "Quiet tent", turn the lights down in the room, turn soft music on...............list goes on. After getting involved I can see how Difficult it can be in a classroom setting to make these adjsutments. But a good Teacher & a good school system will make sure it gets done to the fullest extent BEFORE calling the parents ot come get the child.......that should be an End all last resort. That in itslef can also ahve Long term consiquences as well

    the people I know..............
    Classroom Teacher
    Resource Teacher
    School Phsycologist
    Occupational Therapist
    Speach Therapist
    School Coordinator
    Principal
and 2 other members of LPS Speds program.

That above is some of the most important pieces to all this. Getting to know the teachers/resources that are involved in your child's life is extremely important. We know each of his teachers, all his specialist, just about everyone that you have named in your list as well.

As you said, there are definitely better ways of handling the situation than what this school has done in the past.

    Re: (hsb)

Something else I know......Teachers are Open to Idea's, but you have to adress it in a manner that is not derogitory to them doing there Job. No one wants to feel they don't do good enough, and to start off by telling someone "you're not doing it right" is usually not the best way to approach a positive result.

It's hard for both Parents & Teachers to swallow there pride and come to common ground FOR THE CHILD.....because thats what its really all about.
