I have a 1996 Johnson 115 Faststrike and the motor runs great. The only problem I have with it is starting it when it's cold. I just bought the boat this winter and don't have any paperwork for it. What is the correct "starting" procedure for this motor? Also...what spark plug and gap should this motor have? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
See the above spark plug chart for your motor it is "pinned" there.
Starting procedure put boat in H20 hold choke key for 5-10 seconds, release and crank. Should bust off in about 2 tries, feather choke if H20 is cold. Check Quick Start sensor. If in ? replace. Should start within 3 or 4 MAX. Look other places if this doesn't happen.
This sounds stupid but bear with me. I'm used to a 25 HP Evinrude stern drive so this is all new to me. When you say hold down the choke key...do you mean the button on the throttle assembly? And should the key be in the on or off position when doing this? What do you mean by feather the choke?
It was all so easy in the old days!
To choke your motor you push the key in.
Turn the key to the on position, then push it in for choke. To feather your choke, push the key for a couple seconds then let off a couple seconds, push, let off and repeat 2 or 3 times. You need to get an owners manual for your motor. There is much to learn grasshopper.
