How many keep vehicles this long?

I see tons of new cars and trucks on the road. At tournaments I would always see a mix of new and old, some of the new were really pricy. I love those big diesels.

I just wondered how many keep vehicles and just maintain them. For example, I have a Lincoln LS8 with 152,000 miles on it and I plan on making it double that. Especially since it is worth more to me now than I could get Do you trade your car in as soon as it is paid off?

for what they cost drive'm till they start nickel and dime'n ya to death. if you do the maint. and take care of them we should get a long time outa them. the price of a new truck was 4 times what my parents paid for there house. i got a new truck 5 years ago for work , my dads head about spun around when he saw what i paid. oil and grease are your two best friends

My last Dodge I had, I drove it for 11yrs with well over 200,000 miles. I plan on driving my current Dodge just as long.

I bought my Silverado new, 10 years ago. It just rolled 112k. When I decide to get a new one in 4 or 5 years, I'll probably keep as a daily driver, since it won't be worth anything on trade.

I chase too many whitetails to keep one for too long. Once it gets to the point to where I can't trust it, I gotta move on. My 08 Silverado was purchased new in Aug of 08 and it now has 87000 on it so its got a few more years. Got a pretty long season between Alabama and Tennessee and have put up to 25K just in one season. Its usually around 15k per but depending on the season. Where I live I never have to tow the Bee very far to get to the water so the fishing miles aren't that bad.

I have to trade trucks every 20-24 months (usually 100,000 miles). They are usually shot by then.....

I normally keep my trucks until I get about 100k miles. Then I trade. I average over 30,000-35,000 per year, so about every 3 years or so, I get a new one or a newer one. The 2011 I now have, will have to last me longer than that I am afraid. Just don't forsee the cash flow to allow me to trade at the 100k mark.

my truck is a 2001 F250 7.3L Powerstroke. Has 207,000 miles on it and it's paid for. I have no plans to replace it at all. In fact just put new front brake pads on it yesterday - still cheaper than a payment !!!

I usually keep mine until at least 125-150k miles. Last one had 151k on it when I sold it and this one has 123K. Should last at least another 2-3 years before I trade it.

Mike, the over the road delivery trucks delivery we run are one ton 3500 Dodge diesels, (6 of them), till now and the new one is the Ford F350. Had to give Ford a shot on 2012 as they survived with no bankruptcy on their own. While these are not personal vehicles we put 300,000 plus on them pulling up to the 25,000+ range. We have to put at least 300,000 on them for freight charges to be reasonable.

i keep mine until the tires fall off.
Well...once upkeep and maintenance starts costing as much or more than a payment anyway...or if the body rusts off it.
Got 190,000 on my van...keeping it for a little while yet.

last truck was 91 K1500 Stepside. bought it with about 95k on it.....kept it about 8 years & had about 170+k on it. Traded for the 99 Yukon to have more room for Family and had 92k on it......had it about 4 going on 5 years now & has roughly 130k and plan to keep it for a while.

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee that my parents handed down to me that has over 216,000 on it.. Hopefully it makes it to 300,00 as I do not want to even think about spending money on a "new" to me vehicle

Re: How many keep vehicles this long? (Mike Daleo)

I usually don't keep my trucks that long, my cars I drive forever but trucks are usually gone with low miles. My 2010 Super Duty had 9800 miles when I traded it. The 2006 GMC before it had around 38K. The 2005 Tacoma TRD had under 30k, the 2004 Super Duty before that had under 8k (That was the one truck I've had that was a pile o crap with issues popping up at just over 500 miles) The 2002 Tundra before that was under 30K, the 2000 Tacoma before that had about 30k.

I think trucks are what I waste my most money on, they could easily go way more miles but I traded each of them off because I wanted a new one. Trading a truck with low miles that's only a couple years old seems crazy to a lot of folks but the depreciation isn't terrible and it's worth it to me. Everytime I buy a new truck I figure it's going to be the one I keep until the wheels fall off, the latest 2012 F150 w/ Ecoboost is the same but in another couple years who knows.

never had a vehicle even close to 100k. I prefer newer models and as long I can can swing it I'll have newer vehicles.

Re: How many keep vehicles this long? (Mike Daleo)

I usually keep mine until it starts costing me more than what the truck is worth. In June I traded in my 2001 Chevy Silverado w/140k on it for a 2011 Chevy silverado.

I don't think I will be keeping this one as long. I have gotten transfer to a different Plant in Pratt & Whitney and now I drive 100 miles round trip compare to 14 miles round trip. I owned my truck for 7 months now and I have 21k miles on the odometer.

Mine is a 96 with around 149000 on it. It's starting to need some major repairs that won't be worth it to me. I'll fix it until something big comes along. Right now all the rubber and plastic pieces are starting to dry, crack, and leak, they will add up in cost pretty quick.
