Question for Rusty about a Johnson 300

Rusty and anyone else with knowledge on this topic

I am looking at a '96 Cobra with what I think is a '95 Johnson 300 on it. I posted a couple of questions on the Cobra forum and Backlash pointed me toward you. The boat and motor look like they have been taken care of and I believe they have been kept covered/garaged. Are there any issues I need to know about on this motor? Also, what is it called? All I have been able to find is that I believe it is a V8 and I found what I think is are model numbers from the Bombardier web site. That is also where I found that it is probably a '95 rather than a '96 since there was no information on a '96 300. I will be going by to look at the boat again Mon. or Tue. and I will get the HIN and motor number at that time.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Question for Rusty about a Johnson 300 (k46tank)

O.K. it turns out that the motor on this boat is actually a Johnson Special Edition 3.0 Finger Port and I am assuming that it matches the boat year and is a 1996. I have been told that it is a 200hp that has been converted (factory) to 225hp.

Is there any issues that I should be concerned about and anything I need to look at prior to buying?

Just have a dealer check it before you buy.

Rusty can't help you very much if you don't post a serial number and model number.

    First its a V-8....Then its a V-6 that has a factory Hop-Up????????????

Sorry you didn't seem to like my answer but model and serial number would help get a better answer.

Re: Question for Rusty about a Johnson 300 (Bassmeister)

Well, I was originally told that it was a 300 hp Johnson. But, after I went and looked at it I posted that it was actually a 1996 Johnson Special Edition 3.0 Finger Port. That is what it says on the cowl and there are no other markings. I was told in a post on the Cobra board that the motor was a 200 hp that was factory converted to a 225 hp. I was told that this was done by adding a carb kit to up the horsepower, but I did not post the latter part of the information and I apologize for that omission.

I did not get the serial number, because at the time I did not realize that I needed it. I also did not look at the plate on the motor to see if there was any type of model number, so I take full responsibility for that lack of information. I don't know anything about these motors, that is why I am here. I had posted a question about this boat/motor combination in the Cobra forum and was told to come here by one of the Mod's of that forum and ask Rusty about the motors because he is supposed to be one of the "experts".

I apologize for being short in my response to Rusty's post, but, like I said, I don't know anything about these motors and I thought this was the place to get answers. I had already planned (just as I had been told numerous times in the Cobra and Ranger forums) to have my mechanic check out any boat I planned on buying. So a response as short as have your mechanic check it out was not really helpful.

I thought that perhaps I would receive information as to what to look for in that motor, both good and bad. If there were problems with a particular range of serial numbers, then that information could have been passed on and I would have made it a point to provide the serial number. I do apologize for giving the wrong information on the motor in my first post, but I tried to correct the mistake as soon as I actually looked at the motor.

I have learned a lot from BassBoat Central and I hope to learn much more. I am not trying to cause problems, I am only trying to gain knowledge.

Re: Question for Rusty about a Johnson 300 (k46tank)

We usually will sticky the requirements for CORRECT answers, in people giving the #'s off the motors as changes were sometimes drafted in the same M/Y . This helps the guys that are here on their own time, and we have the best of the best here! I will get with the mods about putting the sticky up again for the newer folks! Hope you get the info ya need.
