Re: Honest opinion...225 Optimax vx. 225 HO Evinrude (ezbassin)

I have a 2003 OMC and that's what I would buy again, based on what the mechanic says at the dealer and what OMC has done with the engines since the takeover. Now, this same dealer and Mechanic Have a Merc dealership. As soon as they sell that last Merc, they are over and out! Seems they break too much and they pay about half going rate for dealers to work on under warranty. (So try getting them to fix one) Someone mentioned the Etec, That's even better than a 4 stroke, better fuel economy and less maint. 4 Star emmisions rating, No break in! Full throttle right out of the box! You wait and see, a lot of people will be trying to mimic that motor!

And how about that tarffif suit Merc brought up when they, (Themselves) were importing the same powerheads they were complaining about? They almost suceeded in making a lot of motors 3 to 5 K more expensive for all of us!

Re: Honest opinion...225 Optimax vx. 225 HO Evinrude (uk2thdoc)

since i own a 2004 225ho stars & stripes rude i can tell you from first hand experience it's one fine motor. i went from a '93 200 venom so i can't give a true comparison of 225ho vs the 225 opti. the gas & oil use is almost non-existant at cruise speeds. it will use the petro at wot, as all motors do, but it's still not too bad. no smoke, ever, with the xd100 oil & starts at the first turn of the key. hole shot is neck breaking & purrs like a kitten at idle. top end is awesome, to me anyways, on my 21xd bullet. my comparisons to a 225 merc is when i line up at my small club tourny blast-off & smoke 'em all. one is a 225 opti on a smaller 20ft norriscraft that sees nothing but my spray from a distance. one other is a 225 promax on a 20ft bullet, too. go with the 225ho at the very least, but go with the 225ho etec if at all possible. the best only got better with the etecs.
