And now the winter ritual begins!

Too cold and too blah for anything else so I figure it's time to start hitting the weights hard core. Been lifting all year long but my summer routine is just enough to keep from lapsing into obesity . Time to get back after it. My son is here to stay now so he'll be lifting with me. Gotta get some size on him for football!

A gym just opened up here in Wapello. Very nice gym, loaded with top notch equipment. Boy is 15. He's a little sore today .

Stayed with it all year this year. Didn't work out real hard during the warm weather but at least I was in there, that's a big change from years past. You still hitting the weights Wags?

Been doing it since I was 16, so I figure why not stay with it

Wasn't sure if you were still battling back issues. I figured with my son trying to get into shape for football that legs need to be a focal point again.... I'm feeling it today. I hate legs . Gonna take a while to get back to where I was

Oh come on Joe, Legs is the 2nd best workout behind a nice back workout with some deadlifts!!

Maybe some day I can have a gathering or something or if your in my neck of the woods I can show you my gym. I've been gathering equipment for years now.

The pain goes away after the 2nd week! Then it's just growing pains... Glad you are working out with your son, my dad was too lazy to join me in the gym

Used to love doing legs. My legs used to be ripped up pretty good. Blew my knee out years ago playing softball and just never got back into 'em. Love the deadlifts though

    Re: (JoeBro44)

Will always have the back issues since the work injury, and had to give up competing in 07 but still help the team out to get ready for events. It helps having a gym at home to stay at it also. Plus like we have talked I have several I can go to if I want.
As far as your son keep him at it Joe that will help him way past his football years. When we were the strength coaches for our high school team here we did a lot trap bar dead lifts, helped the kids stay injury free from straight bar dead lifts. It was amazing to see them move bigger guys around the line once we got there center core strength up. With the poper training and the right discipline I always felt like we set these kids up for much more than football in life.

He seems to be really excited about the lifting. He got into it a little last year before he headed back to Florida. Unfortunately they didn't let him work out down there so he's starting all over now . I'm excited about it too as well. The gym here is very nice. Better than the place I was working out in Muscatine.

wags what did you compete in? Bodybuilding or Power-lifting?

The trap bar is a great bar to keep injury free as young kids like to put as much weight as possible to impress their friends and often round their back, unknowingly hurting themself. I learned how to deadlift from Charlie Driskell (sp?). He was a national ranked power lifter one time, now he is a principal in Davenport. Great guy.

    Re: (Shoot)

Jarrad I started in the early 80s doing rep meets, then got into power lifting. My heavy deads and squat days are over, I still do them but at a real low weight. Able to stack some weight on the bench but its not the same feeling like the snot pulling deads.

I know what you mean. I was always the skinny kid in school but when I got to college I was put under some guys wings and I did some bodybuilding training, never got on stage as I never made the true commitment to the sport but I loved the training side of it. I was never a good bencher as I had shoulder pain and I was using my of my arms then my chest just trying to get numbers (stupid kid) but I was able to dead and squat quite a bit for a novice. Now I still lift in my basement as having kids doesn't allow me to make my trips to the gym the same as before. The only piece of equipment I want now is a cable crossover and maybe a pec dec but they aren't needed. I have everything else. If I ever build a house I will either have one large basement with heated floors and 10' ceilings or if I have the room I will put up my pole barn and have half or third of it a gym and the other half/two thirds for my toys.

I have since stopped lifting for numbers as an injury will take me out of work and no work = no money = no food = no fishing lol.

Maybe sometime we can wet some lines and we can bounce some ideas off each other to see if they might fit into what you got going on.

Joe's ears just look long in the picture. Because he is that Short and it makes his ears look bigger.
