    175 Evinrude Intruder (1997)

Hey guys I have a question about my motor. I just had it serviced because it would not start. Before it died on me it was acting strange for a while. It would load up when you put the throttle down to get on plane. Almost hesitate for a second or two. It also stall when trying to drive on the trailer. It finally went so I took it in for svc. The tech replaced the optical ignition sensor and all seemed fine for the first day. I went out again this weekend and it's still doing the same. You have to give it some gas before putting the throttle down to get up on plane. Otherwise it will stall. Any takers on this before I taker her back in this friday... She starts fine and runs fine accept for getting her up to go. Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Sounds like the way mine used to act (1992 175 Intruder). In my case it was a manufacturer issue with the thermostats being designed to run too cold. Of course they didnt figure this out until the warranty was expired. If a 2 stroke runs too cold it will carb up really bad and load up on you. I had the thermos replaced, then decarbed it, and adjusted the mixture and I no longer had this problem. I also use fixed gap plugs QL16V which last forever and are easy to clean. They are expensive, but I have had the same set for several years.

It could just be that you are carbed up, or the thermos could be the cause of the carbon build up.

I assume an outboard thermostat works like a car and fails in the open (too cold) position) to prevent destroying the motor.

You need to look for a crack on the maintenance valve on the primer solenoid. The little red lever on the front of the motor above and to the right of the fuel filter. When it cracks, it will dribble fuel out when you choke/prime the engine. When running, it lets excessive air into the manifolds and throws off the fuel mixture, i.e. not enough fuel thru the low speed to the intermediate range. This will also allow it to fall on its face when putting it back on the trailer. You do not have to run the engine to find the problem. Turn the key to the on position, apply pressure to the primer bulb while somebody pushes in on the primer. If it leaks at the valve, replace it. If you pump up the primer bulb and the pressure does not stay in the bulb, you have a problem elsewhere in the fuel system. This is a quick and easy test and the valve is about $5.00. The tech more than likely did find a fault with the sensor, they are a common part to replace, about a 5 year life!!
