I noticed from inspecting the microfiche that the 300 xs has dense foam inserts that have an adhesive backing and are fitted to install in the bottom of the lower pan halves.... I ordered them and installed them . They take away the rattle completely and I would advise anyone with a 3 liter to install them... The pair cost me $ 70.00 cdn

8M0007874 lower cowl foam STBD .... 8M0007873 Foam ... That is exactly what is on the packages from mercury.....
    Those will work quite nicely.

Now that's what I'm talking about!! There is a kit from Mercury to install to avoid the results of what causes the rattle?? How about a link to see this foam piece? Can you post it please Don??
    Thanks
    Craig

I just found it and it shows the foam pieces that fit into the lower cowling on the 300XS and then I looked up the 250 Pro XS and it did not show the foam pieces. So then I noticed that the lower cowling part numbers were identical with the 300XS and the 250 PROXS so BINGO there ya have it. Please verify all this info for us Don, this may be another fix for the rattle/wear points in the lower cowl!!

The below link will show a parts diaghram of the lower cowling (and sound dampners) on the 300XS. They will indeed fit the lower cowlings for the 225/250 models as well (but are not standard equipment on that model):

    Mercury Parts Express

Will they also work on a 200 Opti (still a 3 liter engine) ?

Should work on all 2003 and later 3L Optimax models.

Not really Mike, now when we all call at once and they're back-ordered for 2 months due to high demand we'll blame you.

Mercury should be sending non-XS customers under warranty the foam kit FREE - It's an obvious design flaw when the vibration is wearing a hole through the lower cowl on both sides don't you think

The sound blankets are not factory-installed equipment on the 225/250 engines.

Additionally... this problem does not exist on "all" engines. I see NUMEROUS engines weekly with no signs of this problem.

Okay, officially back ordered. Ordered today, May 8th date at best. What do you use to mount these as far as adhesive/glue?

If adhesive backing is not already provided (it may very well be)... 3M trim adhesive can be utilized.

There is a clear plastic backing on them that uncovers a tough adhesive

Guys, if you are having the rattle problem there are way cheaper ways of fixing it. You are going to have the lower cowl off to install the Merc part anyway , just get some thick foam weather strip from Lowes and cover the spots that show wear. Why pay $70 for a piece of foam? It ain't no big deal to fix, believe me.
