1990 GT200 Timer base question
I posted this morning, but looks like it disappeared. I have 1990 GT200, J200stlese, started as intermittent power loss, now will barely run. Before would go from 5800 then down to 4200 rpms. Now, #2 and #6 cylinder are the only ones getting consistent spark using timing light. #1 will start showing steady spark, then becomes intermittent, as does rest of starboard side. As soon as rpm is increased, shows no spark. #4 is showing no spark at idle, but returns as soon as rpm increased. Timer base output checks are within spec, its resistance reading that have me confused. I dont get low ohm reading following manual. I can swap test probe (placing black on white/white black) and starboard side is 450-500, and port has two that are 75 and one that is 200. I can get reading per manual using red probe, but only if on M ohm scale. 5 of the 6 leads are all 2.53 - 2.69 Mohms, with the 6th being approx 4.09 (this reading tend to keep going up and down while ohmmeter connected 4.03 to 4.25, last time I checked this one was 5.36). This lead is same on port side that was 200 where other 2 were 75.
Has new powerpack and stator. Output on old stator was below spec and charge coils were puddling. I have tried all the wire disconnects (shift switch, stop wires, etc) and no difference in spark. Also have swapped coil/coil wires and problems do not follow. I have found some info online that timer base is open circuit and should not have resistance readings. Just looking for advice.....Thanks

When you had the flywheel off did you inspect the outer ring on it? The outer ring has two marks on it that keep the timing right. Also was the woodruff key still in place on the crank? I have seen the ring on the flywheel become loose and drive techs nuts. If it is loose you can use Marine tex to secure it again. If that is OK then the timer base is suspect.

Woodruff key was still in place. Did not know about the marks on the flywheel, is this on the bottom side? I do suspect timer base, did resistance check again last night, reading were all over the place!

No the marks are on the outside of the ring. If you take the FW off again take a marker and make two marks from the outside of the ring to the bottom of the FW. Run the motor for a bit and see if the marks have shifted.

Will do! Thanks for the help.
