Aussie lizards....big lizards...

Went to Burrinjuck Dam, about 100mile form home up in the Mountains, for a fish...trolling along , as usual while looking around with the camera and takin a few pics of any wildlife , then we spotted this big brute !!,

Its an Australian Goanna, usually we see them around 3 or 4' long, but we estimate he was at least 6' long, , I certainly wasn't getting out of the boat to check !!.

He was looking for something to eat & found a dead Turtle, this turtle would have had a shell approx8/10" across , so you get the idea hers not small !!

Goannas will bite when cornered, but they have a dangerous trait in that when they are cought out with nowhere to hide , they will run & climb "up" a human as they usually run up a tree & hide .

The Goanna bite is particularly painfull, especially in light of the toxic saliva theyb leave on the wound, they have extremely sharp (but not large ) teeth & the wound becomes septic & quite often suffers tissue damage. The wound are known to take a long long time to heal.

i had a nile monitor when i was in college it was about 4 ft...it was a sweetheart though, we would take him for swims in the pool, he loved it. really though he was a mean sob.
