    Canon Lens Advice??

I have a Canon Rebel T1i with an 18-55mm lens and also have a sigma macro lens that I really enjoy. I'd like to find a good telephoto lens to extend the range of my shooting. Does anyone have some advice on which lens, a good place to purchase, or maybe even have something that will work for me? I might have some nice tackle to trade for the right lens, just in cas Thanks in advance!

I think the first question will be your budget?

Re: Canon Lens Advice?? (Ky Z21)

That seems to be the biggest question...

I've found them from about $100 (70-300) basic lens with no IS up to way more than I'd ever consider spending.

I now understand more about the benefits of the f 2.8 lenses, but again, not sure if I want to drop $750 on one of those... decisions, decisions...

    Re: Canon Lens Advice?? (Bronzefly)

I have this one and I love it http://www.lensrentals.com/ren....6-is I rented one before I bought a new one. I found one new from a dealer in IN for $550 delivered. Shoots 18mmm and 200 mm great. I'll have it tomorrow photoing drag cars in INDY then off to our cabin in the Smokies to photo bears etc... I love it to place my T1i and the 18-200 in my back pack and start hiking. If you look at most all of my photos that I posted from TN ...its done with this lens. I've rented a 28-300 and 100-400L.... to be honest, other than the L's have longer reach, obviously, My $550 lens is all what the $2500 L lens are. If it breaks tomorrow, I'll buy a new one without hesitation. You have one of these lenses you can sell you kit lens' on Ebay. http://www.lensrentals.com/ren....6-is

    These are from the 18-200

The 70-300 is a decent lens. I had one that did have the IS, but ended up selling it to buy a 70-200 F4L. I'm seriously thinking of getting a Sigma 150-500 for shooting Airshows. The 70-200 is a very sharp lens. You would be happy with the 70-300, and for 100 bucks you can't beat it.

    Re: Canon Lens Advice?? (Bronzefly)

    Gary,

Here's some good browsing reading material. I spent a lot of time on this website.

    http://the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/

With that said, I love my 70-200 F4 non IS. I bought it at a local camera shop. It's priced in the $600's so it won't break the bank.

You can find them used at POTN or Fred Miranda as an alternative. If you want new, B+H Photo Video is the mecca for photographers.

This isn't going to replace your 18-55, but more like compliment it for tele shots, portraits, sports, etc. Being a F4, it's most ideal with good ambient lighting. It's non IS, which isn't an issue if you're shooting with light. Some say this lens is sharper than it's IS sister. It's also much lighter than the 2.8.....

However the 2.8 will get you good shots in low light situations and good bokeh when you stop it down.

Really depends what you need it for. With the white L lens on, people have moved out of my way because they thought I was a "pro" photographer.

Thank you all for the info!

This is WAY more confusing than buying a great rod or reel

    OK guys -
    I'm considering this one...

Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF Lens

I've read the reviews - it has pros and cons. Anybody ever use one?

    Re: Canon Lens Advice?? (Bronzefly)

I looked at purchasing one before the Canon 18-200 I bought. I read a few articles about the Sigma's having auto focusing issues...enough that I passed on the purchase. I believe the 250 reach would be an awesome all purpose lens. Especially for what I wanted to do with it.....hike and general shooting. Keep me informed on what you end up with as I'm still curious to the Sigma's quality. For the same money, I like my Canon 18-200.

Thanks for the tip... The Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD LD is the one I decide to go with. I know it's not a professional lens, but I'm an amatuer so I think it will do what I need it to do... it'll be here tomorrow

Right now I'm VERY PISSED OFF! I have a brand new "not cheap" lens with "zoom creep" as Tamron customer service put it. With my camera on a tripod, angled sharply down to take a photo, the lens slowly "slides" out and won't stay in place - neither on auto focus or manual focus settings Going to contact amazon.com about a replacement or now am thinking about going an entirely different direction

My 18-200 creeps a little too. The L's have lock rings ....$500 vs $2500 though.

That sucks but they do have warranty available, I have a few buddies that have them and love them I borrowed one and used it for awhile and liked it however I didnt place it on a tripod at a steep angle, I have a 70-300 tamaron that will creep a little however like Richard said unless you want to lay down the big bucks alot of the cheaper lense's in this size range will creep somewhat.

Re: Canon Lens Advice?? (Ky Z21)

This wasn't a "little" creep... it was a full blown slide to its most extended point. No way this is right... fortunately, amazon.com is overnighting me a new lens and I'll have it tomorrow. GREAT customer service from them to say the least. Needless to say, the first thing I'm going to do is set it up the exact same way. If the issue persists, I'll go for a refund and consider my options... thanks for all the help guys!

    Re: Canon Lens Advice?? (Bronzefly)

    update...

amazon.com sent me a replacement lens. it creeps some as well, but not nearly as much as the other. I suppose it's to be expected at sharper angles, but this one is definitely better. I'm enjoying the lens so far. Big thank you to amazon.com as well
