RAW Question

As I have posted before, I am fairly new to digital photography. I am now experimenting with shooting RAW files. I am shooting a Nikon D7000 and since I switched to 'RAW FINE' My exposure rate has droped to over 1/2 of what it use to be......... in continous shooting mode, I went from around 6 FPS to 2 fps, the camera wants to buffer between shots. Do I need to get a different SD card, or is there somthing I need to change in the camera settings? I have been shooting some Senior Babe Ruth baseball games, and I feel frame rate is pretty important. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: RAW Question (91Skeeter200)

    Hey Charles,

IMHO there's really no need to shoot in RAW + JPEG.

Either shoot in RAW if you don't like your camera's processing of jpegs or plan on a lot of post processing, or just tweak your jpeg settings (called picture control) in Nikon's menus and shoot inn jpeg.

A RAW file contains 100% of the data your camera captures.

In JPEG, the camera dumps all the unused information once it creates the file.

IMHO, while the D7K is a great camera, the buffer certainly leaves a lot to be desired. For that reason, I would do 95% of my shooting in JPEG medium, and only switch to fine or RAW for landscape/architecture type stuff.

I'm sure you've read on various websites, that if your a serious photographer you should always shoot in RAW, but in the real world, 99.5% of the population wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you showed them 8X10's shot in RAW or JPEG.

A perfect example would be the set I just posted from NYC, those were all shot in JPEG.

As far as memory cards go, a Sandisk 60md Extreme is the only way to go......

    Happy shooting.

    Re: RAW Question (Sneezy Beltran)

Thanks Sneezy! That is what I was wanting to know, I think I will just go back to JPEG and tweek the camera settings like you mentioned. You sure did good on the NY Photo's....... They look Awesome!

    Thanks Again,
    Charles

Yea, my d3000 has the same buffer issue. I even went and got a class 10 card for it and it made no difference.

I tried shooting in raw a bit but I have found I am very pleased with the jpeg results i get from it so far.

    Re: RAW Question (91Skeeter200)

The only reason to shoot RAW is if you are going to be producing high end commercial type images. When using Photoshop and others it makes retouching a little better. For everyday photographs including portrait photography there is no need to shoot RAW
