Pretty much, YES.
I think that's an "and/or" law though? I don't have a book here, but, best I can remember. An orange flag and some other related stuff and know how to yell and wave your arms...or....flares and a way to fire them.
Many of our waters are, or can be considers and enforced by federal AND core.
I just know on Dardanelle, it's possible to get pulled over, check out fine, and be on your way. AND get pulled over again an hour later and get a ticket by a different agency.
I think the new secret color is "A-Rig"..........
I just happen to have the boating handbook here at my desk.. It does state that you have to have a VDS (visual distress signal) in your boat if on federal water, this does include all the Corps lakes. Looks like a orange flag serves as a daytime VDS and a electric light (flashlight, spotlite, etc..) can serve as a night time VDS. Should be pretty easy to stay legal with this law. There are several other possible VDS's listed in the handbook but these two seem to be the simplest and probably the most common things that you more than likely already have.
I've always kept one in my boat. It also has the signals listed with it. Actually thought it was always the law.![]()
My book has several options. Flag, lights, flares, hand signals, OR...A Yamaha to avoid the whole distress situation from the git go.

I have no idea if its a new law or not, luckily I have been legal the whole time without knowing itI know I have never been checked for it in all the times that I've been checked out on the water.

This was posted by Barling Boat Sales. Boaters come by the store and pick up a distress flag if you use your boat on any federally controlled waters. Tickets are being issued to anyone not carrying one in their boat (especially at Blue Mountain Lake).
