    Yamaha 175 Pro V

I have a yamaha 175 prov. I bought a 1990 ranger with this engine. I went fishing yesterday and this guy in a champ came up to me saying how nice the engine was and how good it sounded. I have no idea but he was saying that I had a beefed up engine. Something about a tuner, big carbs and some heads. The engine runs great, fast and smooth. Is there anyway to see if there has been engine work done? I always been told that these old yamahas are really strong and tuff motors. To be honest I was offered a good trade deal on a new yamaha Vmax 175 at my local boat store.

If it has any work done to it, it was prolly these guys http://www.yamaha-rebuild.com/...f.htm

Those were strong motors out of the box.

If it has HydroTec heads, you can tell by looking at the inboard side of the head right where it contacts the block. You should see a stamped 4 digit number on both heads. You have to take the plastic cover off of the electronics to see the number. Or check compression. You should have around 140 psi with recreational heads and above 160 for the race heads. If you have the rec heads, run 89 octane, 93 with the race heads. Also, HydroTec keeps a record based on VIN if they did the work. Give them a call............

What happens if you run 87 octane with high compression heads?
