    Lower Unit Water Intake Plugging

Let's see who's plugging off intake holes on the 21'10" boats. Just Curious to see if it's only worth doing it on the 20 footers.

Re: Lower Unit Water Intake Plugging (FSH4BAS)

I have the top 4 on each side plugged but I see someone voted that they have more than 4 plugged.. I am interested to know how well this works because I have a TXP OT4 that seems to lift the bow no matter how high I jack it .. I am 1/2 inch below pad with the 4 holes plugged and my water pressure is only around 12 lbs.at WOT ... I would like to go higher on the plate but I was advised on here not to plug any more than the top 4 holes with my TM ....

Re: Lower Unit Water Intake Plugging (canadablazer)

The results of the poll are very interesting. I was wondering if the top 4 holes are even necessary. There should be plenty enough cooling flow with the holes in the torpedo to compensate. Another mystery question for Mercury. If these LU's were designed to run at higher engine heights, then why make it easier for the LU to suck air by putting these holes so high or putting so many? Some people may say that's what the Sporty is for, but as everyone knows, the Sporty is not optimal for the sub 88 mph boats or in many cases may be detrimental to performnce. I just think eliminating 4 holes or lowering them further down on the gearcase would give folks a lot more flexibilty in tuning their setups without "jury rigging" their LU's and voiding warranties.

What if you are running LU that only has 4 on each side? Is it safe to plug 1 or 2, there are no other water pickups.
