1998 175 Evinrude FICHT powerhead replaced with a 2000 power head

    Hi Guys,

I was hoping somebody could help me. I purchased a 1998 grady white boat with a 1998 175 Evinrude FICHT motor. The power head was replaced in June of 2000 and has 159 hours on it.

The serial number of the 1998 motor is: 4439333 and the model number is E175FSXEC. Is there a way to find out if the new 2000 power head is a FICHT power head or a FICHT RAM power head?

Thanks for all your help. Chris

Re: 1998 175 Evinrude FICHT powerhead replaced with a 2000 power head (chrisbil)

A '98 FICHT has an air cooled computer (ECU) that mounts on the top aft part of the powerhead and it has a series of fins on it for cooling. A black plastic cover goes over it and directs the flow of air. The injectors are threaded into the cylinder heads and retained by huge silver nuts.

A 2000 FICHT is a redesigned motor called a FICHT Ram and it uses a water cooled computer called an EMM. It has a small diameter hose on the side of it that goes to a round plastic do-hicky which has a diaphragm in it, then connects to the lower stb. side of the block to sense the exhaust backpressure. There are also two 5/16" ID hoses on the opposite side that direct the cooling water thru the EMM. The injectors are flanged and held to the cylinder heads by 2 bolts.

Take a look at your motor and see what you've got.

    Seahorse,

Thanks for the reply, Is there away you can check the serial number on the old motor at BRP and see what OMC sent to the prior owner before me ? I was wondering if they sent me a dressed powerhead or not. The boat is shrink wraped in my back yard and the engine cover is shrink wraped too. So I cannot take the cover off to see until the spring.

I had the marina change all the plugs, lower unit oil and fuel filter on the motor. Also I had a new waterpump installed too. The hour meter said it has 159 hours on the motor but did not have the marina do a diagnostic chek with the software. I recently purchased the software so I will check in a few weeks. Thanks again Chris
