What about a rebuild? It doesn't have to leak to have bad seals.

Make sure the screw is closed tight that allows you to manually lift the engine when opened.

Mine does the same thing. Bleeds down and trims up very slowly and sounds like its full of air. I've bled it several times with no luck. Going to have to bite the bullet and get a new unit.

Skeet22 made the same post about his http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id=765312

Take a look at what I posted.

I made a post about the same exact problem not too long ago, and there were a few others complaining about the same problem when I posted at that time. This is a problem, and a very expensive one for us, who appear to be more and more. I spent over $800 in repair costs for this, and still have the same problem as you. Every part that could be contributing to this problem was replaced. The only thing left for me to do is live with it and see how long it lasts, or replace it, which for me, I refuse to do and would rather sell the motor and get a different one. I love my HPDI, but refuse to continue repairing something at costs of Yamaha parts being double comparatively to other motor manufacturers.

This is ridiculous and Yamaha needs to address this issue. It appears to be a problem so far reported by those who own HPDI's from 2001-2008 so far from what I have seen.

Mine did as well untill I added two ounces of straight non detergent motor oil to it. No more noise..............

Ran my unit for 5.5 years after doing it and no problems an old yamaha mechanic told me about this after yamaha tried bleeding it and failed.

Re: Tilt/Trim unit going bad (Sigma)

have a similar problem with mine i had the unit rebuilt. And spent several hrs bleeding the system, i also ended up having to order a new trim motor itself, as i thought that was the problem as which it helped alot but still didnt fix it. I filled the system and cracked the screw and let it gravity bleed for about 3 days to try and get all the air out of the system. It works great and fast going down, but going up it takes a sec to catch and while its trimming up it sounds like air is still in it. It seems like a no win situation lol..

Re: Tilt/Trim unit going bad (Skeeter97)

I added the 2 ounces of motor oil like said above and it has made a difference already. Trims up faster quieter and the motor is not bleeding down as bad anymore if at all.

    Thanks sigma

Glad it's working for you, it's a shame I spent several hundred dollars in gas driving to my dealer before I figure it out.

What exactly does adding non-detergent motor oil do to the hydraulic fluid? Just wondering why this helps....

I believe when I did it I was told it kept it from foaming and bubles.
