Oil Leak--Need Help

I have a 2009 HPDI Series 2 200 hp. I noticed some drops of oil on the ground under my motor. I took the cowling off and noticed oil down in the bottom cowling. After searching around, it looks like the oil is coming from the air intake. I took off the plastic air handler (I guess thats what you call it) and each air intake had oil in it. Checked all the oil lines that I could see and did not find anything loose. Oil reservoirs in boat and on motor are at normal level. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

It could be several things but I would start at the oil pump linkage and see if its set right or disconnected. Could be a broken reed valve or reeds not sealing. If you find a broken reed I would do a compression test to see if more serious problem is evident. But typically the oil pump linkage is set very rich on these motors and if the motor was sitting tilted up for some time it will leak oil. Yamaha says it suppose to be set to run 50:1 on gas/oil but most are set closer to 30:1.

The oil is sprayed in right behind the throttle plates. So you will have some oil running back out of the throttle plates when the engine is shut off. But to have enough to drip out and onto the floor does seem excessive. Are the hoses hooked up to the lower corner of the air box. I agree the oil pump linkage needs to be checked. If your engine is running up to top RPM then I would bet you dont have a broken reed.

Rich Z and hooken203 thanks for the responses. I first noticed it after it sat in the transome saver for a few days after a fishing trip. As far as RPM's or performance, engine runs great (5800 RPM's). The hoses at the bottom of the air box are hooked up. One thing I did notice is the o-ring on the air box appears to be slightly damaged at the bottom of the box, which is where the oil leaks from. Might take it out and flip it so the bad spot is at the top. Next question would be, if that stops the oil from leaking out what happens to it now? Does it just get sucked up into the motor or what?

One of those hoses is the vent for the oil tank and the other goes to the intake so it should get pulled back into the engine.Are you doing alot of idling or short runs? You should still check the oil pump linkage is hooked up and adjusted properly.

I don't think I do a lot of idling unless it's in a long no wake zone, most of my running is a min. 10 minutes or longer. I'll check the linkage and see what I find. Thanks for all the advice and help.

Hey; I have an 07 225 hpdi that had the same issue. After investigating I found the o ring pinched...simply fix the o ring by putting it back in the channel and carefully put the air box back on. Once I did this it never leaked all summer!!!
The reason it leaks is due to the air leak causing vaccuum and the oil gets out of the box. You shouldn't have any issue after fixing this. If the o ring is not repairable you can buy a replacment from an industrial supplier.
