    Got another job offer

Ok guys I need some advice. I work for Halliburton now as a cmpletion fluids engineer. I have been there 6 years, like my job and make decent money and good benefits. I was offered a job as a company rep. Its a job as a consultant working directly for the oil company the work is being done for. Pay is $1300 to $1500 a day. No 401k or insurance. I will have to pay my own taxes and there is no guarantee on work. If work is slow now I make a salary so the bills always get paid and I make extra when i work. Thats what is kinda scaring me. I am not worried about insurance because I have insurance through the military. I dont know if its worth the chance of it getting slow and I dont work for a month with no salary as a back up. What you guys think?

Re: Got another job offer (Thib)

Working for the same company as you I have a few buddies that made the same move to consulting and not one of them have came back looking for their job... I'm pretty sure we have seen the worse of slow times in the oil feild for a while. It should only get better from here esp once you know who is gone..

Re: Got another job offer (Thib)

We have all seen those guys that chase the money over the years. I have known some really great guys with far better skills than myself. But, they always seem to talk about how good things are, doing what they do, then they are gone.
This is obviously my own experience. Skeet also makes a good point though.

I will fall back on a few things we have heard all our life...............

    A bird in the hand....................

    The grass always looks greener..............

Like anything worth having in life, a job is what you make of it. You can hate your job and it will continue to suc. If you like your job now, you will probably like it in the future.

    I just re-read what I wrote and I am certain I helped

Materials/Inventory Manager for drilling and completion fluids based out of Fourchon stockpoint. Been here going on 12 years now..

You just have to weigh your options man. If you stay your pretty much secure unless you do something really crazy and we have excellent benefits etc.

Once you build some good relationships consulting you should stay as busy as you want.. If you do not need the insurance that makes it even more appealing for you and there are plenty ways to invest for retirement. I've been contributing to 401k since I was 18 at its like watching grass grow, then when it gets pretty tall someone comes with a bush hog and chops it back down... I get those statements in the mail that say I'm on track to accumulate 3 million by retirement but it sure does not look like it..

Good luck , I dont think you can go wrong either way.

Re: Got another job offer (Thib)

For me it would depend on a few things. First, if I had 6 mos to a year of cash in the bank. Second, How much debt do I have. Third, do I have another income (wife/pension) etc. Everyone is built different and some can handle things better than others. I am a business owner and I probably would have had a happier, less stressful life working for someone else but others thrive on being their own boss. Its a tough call.

The only thing I've noticed about consulting work is it's either feast or famine. Not much in between.

Re: Got another job offer (Alan S)

I work off commission and there are times it's great and times it is very stressful. I would take a small paycut to know that I had a for sure check coming every month. There may be more money out on the table with this new job but is it worth the risk and stress? Don't know. I'm not familiar with the industry you are in. There's alot to be said for benefits too. They must be evaluated in the overall compensation package. Good luck with your decison.

Had a long talk with one of my friends thats a consultant today. I am pretty sure I will stay were I am at for now. To many ifs and I have 3 kids at home. If it was a guarantee I would be all over it. But the unknown is eating at me.

Thib, I work for your competition (SLB) and we have had a few leave for consulting jobs and not one has looked back. We all know it's feast or famine, but the Gulf is busy and will stay busy for yrs to come. I would say the biggest advantage would be, aside from the money, is not having to deal with all of the day to day bullshit that these huge service companies have. You can focus on the job at hand and not get sidetracked with stupid, pointless objectives that we have to meet to make our management look good. Whatever you do, good luck.

With that said I am VERY appreciative of the job I have that has allowed me to provide for my wife and two girls. They are not starving or lacking much by any means. It does get old being processed and audited to death though. The days of just getting the job done are over..

I agree. I am probably one of the most requested engineers we have in our department but yet raises are hard to come by because Halliburton throws that "raise freeze, hiring freeze" BS because of revenue but yet my tickets are several millions on some jobs. Hard work and getting the job done dont get the recognition it used to. Skeet whats your name im gonna look for you if i get a chance to go. I have spent weeks in fourchon building fluid already. I am sure I have seen you and we have probably met already.

    Re: (Thib)

Ive been doing water transfer for gas fracs on land for going on ten years. Ive became real good friends with quite a few company men. My ex-BIL has been one for about four years now. The only complaint Ive heard any of them say, and all of them has said it several times is " sometimes the bs aint worth the money" but they have all stayed busy doing what they know how to do. The way you sit now you can stay where you are and the co-man job will always be there when you get ready for it, or you can take the new position and if it dont work out I would bet you can get your old job back. With that being said taking the new job would probably be easier down the road vs getting your old one back down the road. I agree 100% about the doing a good job and being requested, but still not getting the $ you are worth. I bet the ones turning down the raises due to lack of income are not turning down their bounses. I know several men who have came from the pond and started consulting on land, there is plenty of work here, the bad part is you may have to travel to get it. Good luck with your decision.

Thib if you decide to leave and have any questions on the completions side, holler at me. I've been dealing with scssvs, chemical injection valves and control lines for 8 yrs. Again, good luck.
