    "Screeching" Noise in 250 SHO

Yesterday after a short run, when I returned the shifter to neutral my SHO made a terrible screeching sound. I immediately returned it to gear and it went away, when I put it back in neutral it returned. When it was in gear forward or reverse there was no noise, but i nneutral it sounded terrible. I shifted it forward and reverse twice and had the same results. I even had a passing boat stop and ask if everything was ok. I turned it off and restarted it and the noise was gone. I fished the rest of the day with no problems and no other noises. Scared the absolute you no what out of me. I had the entire computer on it fail in hour 3 of break in and now only have 21 hours on it.

I was trying to find the video that I think SkeetRJ posted on YouTube a while back with some noise at idle, but was unsucessful. Anybody got a link to it?

Re: "Screeching" Noise in 250 SHO (bdub)

I think he removed the video from youtube. It sounds like a shifting issue and not a bearing or bushing to me. Stopping and starting the motor wouldn't make any difference if it were. Do you know if the SHO is mechanically or electically shifted?

You'd better get that thing looked at ASAP. Jamie's just blew this weekend and his was singing a similar tune before she popped.

I know this sounds like the wise guy answer but you made it alot easyer to find the problem. If they have to replace the powerhead why not run it until it is really broke.

What you are describing doesn't sound at all like the squeak I had, which turned out to be just the belt. Mine was unaffected by changing gears and sounded similar to SkeetRJ's. My video is posted on another thread. I agree with others, if another boat noticed it, that is something for a mechanic to look at.

    Re: (Meleagris1)

Hookah, your comment is like saying:
I notice my tire being low, instead of putting air in it, why not run it until I have a blow out????

    What's your point?

    Re: (SkeetRJ)

OK skeetBJ I guess I didnt know how serious all of this is. My post wasnt directed at you but it seems you have some thin skin because of all of your problems with your engine. I will try to serious up here. Let me explain it like this. A few years back I had a truck that had a front diferential noise I checked the oil level in it and found there was alot of metal in it. It looked like a real nice silver metalic paint. It was just about out of warranty the second time I took it in but they wouldnt do anything about it but told me they would cover it if there was a problem in the future. So I had a long trip coming up pulling a heavy trailer by the time I got back the front dif was wasted it was smoking when i got home and every seal was leaking. Now there was an obvious problem and they tried to fix it. So there in lies my point. Like you guys if I took my SHO to the dealer with a complaint and they told me dont worry about it then I wouldnt but I would do everything I could think of to make sure it was absolute junk the next time I came in. In my opinion Yamaha knows they have a problem dont have a fix for it yet and dont want to own up to it yet. From a dealers point of view I wouldnt want to fix it either they dont make much when they do warranty work. Do you need more? I sure have more to say to you but I would get banned.

Re: "Screeching" Noise in 250 SHO (bdub)

I would like everyone to please submit in a reply which questions they would like to have in a survey.

    For example.

What year was your engine manufactured.
At what RPM's do you mostly run your engine.
Would you say you idle more than 25% of the time.
    Have you experienced "making oil"
How many times have you changed the oil in the first 6 months.
Would you by another SHO engine.
Does your engine screech, squeak, or make abnormal noises during operation.

Please list any questions you would like on a survey. I will be creating an online survey to live on Monday October 3, 2011. I intend to notify as many as I can, through as many modes of media as I can in order to get as many responses as possible.
I believe it is up to us to satisfy our own curiosities. Who knows, maybe Yamaha will find it helpful.
    All help is greatly appreciated.

Re: "Screeching" Noise in 250 SHO (SkeetRJ)

"At what RPM's do you mostly run your engine."

This question will not result in accurate answers. Many think they run the engine hard to just see the exact opposite when the see their readouts. I don't think it is relevant.

Polling (like political poles) is a tricky business. I don't know if this will result in good data.

However, I will gladly participate and wish you well.

Again...try to get your engine fixed instead of making a point. I think you will be better off.

Re: "Screeching" Noise in 250 SHO (falcooon)

I will have a specific question that will uncover the outliers (Yamaha haters).
I planned on putting in the question " according to read outs " )
I intend to be as specific and closed ended as I can with the questions.
    Thanks for the help.

Any one of the last three. If I had to pick one it would be the last one.

    Falcooon,

I dont have a dog in this fight but none of us who buys a new outboard regardless of brand or model should have to "TRY" to get the motor fixed. Remember guys WE ARE the customer, not yamaha, merc, or evinrude. We buy a product from them and they should jump through hoops to stand behind that product.

Re: "Screeching" Noise in 250 SHO (clm6741)

I agree with you... My comment on "try" is relative to an earlier post regarding suing.

I am recommending to "try" to negotiate a settlement and repair to his satisfaction, rather than suing, which shuts down communication, and leaves it to the courts and lawyers which can also take years. During this time he is without an operating engine.

Of course suing is a remedy if you are blown off in your efforts.

He is getting service and warranty repairs. It has not been thorough enough because it keeps blowing. Yamaha should give this man a totally new motor and that is what I believe he should push for. Three rebuilds is enough!

That's how I see it Les. How they could ever expect him to consider another Yamaha product after that debacle is beyond comprehension. Give him a new motor and maybe he'd consider another once he felt that they had looked after him.

Margins are tight for everyone right now as we all know but being penny wise and pound foolish rarely works out in the long run and it can cost folks a business relationship....
