    SHO flusher

I don't get out as often as I want and would like to crank my motor once a week. Do they make a lower unit hose flusher for the 225 SHO?

Just my .02 cents worth but I don't think you need to crank the motor once a week.

Exactly. You may do more harm than good. That's a sure way to carbon up your motor and saturate the oil with fuel.

    Re: SHO flusher (microsalmo)

Okay, once a week is too often. How about once a month? I live in Florida so it could be monthly. My question is... Do they make a lower unit flusher for a SHO 225? Do they?

I dont know if there is a specific attachment for the hose to connect to the lower unit. I do know there is a hose connection on the SHO for flushing. I believe it is around the cowling bottom on the starboard side.

    Re: (offduty)

This connection is for "flushing" and specifically NOT for engine operation. To operate the engine you will need a set of muffs that surround the engine water intake screens with the proper fit.

my dealer said you can use the hose attachment for running the engine as long as you keep rpms lower than 1500 or so.

    Not on the SHO! ....

Page 10-7 of the Service manual... in BOLD

"Notice: When flushing the cooling water passages, do NOT start the engine. Otherwise, the water pump could be damaged and the engine could be severely damaged due to overheating."

When in doubt...go by the book and not hearsay!

Yep, Thats what it says in every yamaha manual but I haven't done any damage to any I have ran on a flusher hose. There is enough water pressure and volume to keep everything including the water pump cold. A manual is not a bible and you don’t have to believe in everything what is written.

How about a garden tub from the local farm supply store. You could just lower the unit in there and run it full of water. Leave the hose on and in it to keep things cool.

    Re: (Rich Z)

The SHO,s cooling system is substantially different from the other engines with completely different routing and passages. Taking general assumptions and making generalized statements could be disaster for someone who does this and ruins their water pump or other cooled components.

The hose connection is down stream of the water pump therefore the water is being back fed to the pump. Without proper flow through the pump the pump can get overheated damaged.

Take your risks if you want to, but for my money I'll trust the official Yamaha Service Manual. It was written for a reason.

If you have to run your engine on shore, there is no big deal with getting a tub or the correct muffs and doing it right in the first place.
