Do you find it only rattles while in gear?

It only rattles when you put it in gear at idle. If you put it in neutral the rattle goes away. Or if you put it in gear and apply the throttle slightly it goes away. Sorry I should have added that in the post.
This is a boat I am looking at to buy. I am trying to get an appointment at Hydrotech so they can go over the motor before I buy it. I figured I would ask you guys here to see if any of you had any ideas. The boat owner said he had never noticed the noise before. Other than this noise the motor runs great.
Could be a loose cowling bracket hold the cowling down while it's in gear to see if it goes away.
it's gearcase rattle and it's very common with other outboards also! basically the weight of a heavy stainless prop speeding up past the propshaft and then the clutch dogs and gears catching back up to it, if you apply slight throttle like you said noise goes away cause your keeping everything loaded together. If you were to put a aluminum prop on there you would never hear that!!! but make sure your thrust washer and prop are not loose and thrust washer spinning on the shaft, cause there is a issue with that which could be exageratting the noise,
Same noise from my 2003. Could never chase the noise down.
If you have a slidemaster jackplate check the center bolt, mine works its way loose all the time and rattles
take the cowl off and look under it good for rub marks sound like that something is touching cowling . mine done this before on an ox66 and it was the lift eye touching the underside of cowling .
I was never able to find out what the noise was either. 157 hrs and still going strong.
