Problem with tilt an trim gauge.....

i just purchased a new gauge for my stratos an after fighting with it for a while i finally got it put in.....The gauge does nothing when i tilt the motor up an down...The gauge is brand new so i really wont think that would be the problem .....is there anything else I can check or does it have to be the gauge???? I' checked a couple different times that I had the right wires connected .....I do have power to it cause the back-light lcomes on....

Maybe the trim cam is broken. Do a search on this board from "trim cam", there's plenty of info and pictures.

Thanks for the reply buzzbb........i did some research on the internet but could not find anything on where the trim sender/cam is at....Could somebody please tell me where this is at.....i have a 06 250hpdi

This is from my EFI. Look at this piece (that the ruler is pointing to) and see if it rotates easily, or is cracked. I believe the '06 still used the plastic cam and the new and improved version is metal.

When you trim up or down, that plastic cam should not move on the shaft.



The plastic cam is on the left and is what a good one looks like. A good friend built the one on the right for his engine, then gave it to me (thanks Steve ).

old post, but your buddy should sell those! I broke my plastic one today, but I had the newer galvanized one before, and although I can't remember why the plastic one worked better. I can't remember if the tab kept going by the sender or what. I had a couple of spares but of course now that I need them I can't remember where I put them. That one your friend made looks like it's bulletproof! I'd buy one if he was selling them for sure

According to the shop manual, you hook an ohm meter on the two leads coming from the trim sending unit. With the motor trimmed all the way down adjust the cam to get a reading between 9-11 ohms on the meter. Its a pain in the butt as the cam moves as you tighten the screw to lock it down. Overall a poor design.

Alternatively you can adjust the engine so it is just at the top of the trim rams; just before it goes to the tilt ram. Then adjust the cam so you just get a reading of full trim on the gauge.

Or, trim the motor to the full down position. Adjust the cam so that the gauge reads full down.

Easier to get access to the trim cam with the motor down I find.

Install the new trim cam made of steel. Keep the trim sender itself cleaned and lubricated and it will work well for quite a while.

I see that bass boats typically use far more trim than other types of boats. Are you guys able to trim to the point that the motor is just about to leave the trim regime and go into the tilt regime?

I wish I'd seen this yesterday! I just ordered 1 online for 20 bucks! They used to be 10. I've always had problems with the "updated" galvanized one. It seems when I trim my motor all the way up to put my (new style) transom saver in, the cam goes by the little arm. This doesn't happen with the plastic ones. I'd be happy to pay pal you a few bucks for the shipping/parts as it's always good to have some spares, and I appreciate the offer Jerry.

As far as adjustment/install goes, there is an indent on the shaft, and a little bump inside the clamp of the sender. It should get adjustment pretty close, or at least it always has for me.

Yes depending on the prop and hull.
