Re: Fishing a Fluke ??? (badasscat)

As for a rod I bought a cheap All Star top water rod at academy and it works pretty good. If you get the right rod and setup the reel correctly you should be able to sling it a country mile weightless.

I throw it on a med. Action and weight less. You have let them take it before setting the hook. Takes some getting used to.

I had all president series reels before some one else dicided they needed them more than i did. I bought quantum tour and revo and citicas to replace them, i like them all. Revo is more forgiving, but i can sling it with those tour editions,

Re: Fishing a Fluke ??? (Gun Runner)

I went to a 6'6" medium heavy Okuma G3 rod this year with a citica and 15lb test Seagur InvisX for my weightless fluke setup this year. By far the best combination I've found yet and can still cast pretty far.

One trick I used with teaching my boy to throw it on an open face reel is to insert a 1" 16 gauge finish nail through the tip of the head and down through the body where the point of the nail comes out between the flaps on the bottom. It seems to add just enough weight where even a beginner can cast it. I've also found it's good for making it drop on beds during the spawn and lets the tail sit up a little once it's fallen on the bed. Really pisses them momma's off.

What kind of presentation did you try with it Gun?

I use a 6'6" med action spinning rod for a weightless fluke. But I have 30lb power pro on it too. You can sling a fluke a mile and skip it 15ft under a tree or dock.

Yep... 6'6" medium spinning rig for me too, but I use 10lb mono. It's abut the only thing I have spinning gear for. I present weightless flukes on a 4/0 like a jerkbait, only lighter jerks. More of a twitch and then a longer pause to let it drop back to the strike depth I'm fishing. Never had an issue with hookset.

7'3" medium fast tip carrot stick with a johnny morris elete (blue reel they quit making) and i can throw a weightless fluke or sinko as far as most can throw a rogue!! I use 12 lb floro line...works well for me.

Gun you might need to adjust your internal brakes on that citca. I love my citicas but they dont come set right for throwing wieghtless for some reason. They will throw a country mile when you get it right Love revos too, but I would try that first.

Also when its slow, dont be afraid to dead stick a fluke. If you cant get a bite working it fast slow it down. There have been days I killed em, but not til I finaly stopped moving it. Throw and let it sink and sit there. It no miracle trick, but def one of my favorite things. I fish them alot, but I fish them slower than anyone Ive ever fished with.

Re: Fishing a Fluke ??? (Gun Runner)

When I fish the smallest fluke use size 1 not 1/0.
I caught bass up to 5lbs on these small ones due to matched the hatch pre spawn.
Last year went to Poverty Point stayed at cabins on water in state park which is nice flat screen tv, pleather recliner, on the water, caught huge scaliat off dock while cooking on barbeque pit, and parked boat at cabin. Saw alot of shad about size of smallest fluke. Threw it all over the lake on carolina rig and tore the bass one 4lbs and huge scaliat.

As far as reels I fix them as a hobby and like Shimano due to parts and better design.

Pure fishing makes Pflueger and Abu makes a decent reel, but the return pawl and ratchet are a cheap design. They don't keep parts as long as Shimano. When it won't engage check return pawl and probably has a gash in it. I like Trion and got mine on sell for $49 dollars. Called and bought $12 in extra parts (2 ratchets, 2 return pawls, worm gear, and pawl).
