Yamaha VZ 250 Going to replace the water pump. Need a little insight before starting. Such as In gear or Out of Gear? Speedo tube removal? What special to pay attention to when removing lower unit and water pump housing? Any other details would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance for the help. First time to try changing the water pump. Have checked out the removal of water pump at first of forum.
In neutral to remove it. If you use the speedo, pop the hose off with a screwdriver, carefully. If you don't use it or don't have need for it (it's worthless) just cut it with a knife and plug it. Look at the pump housing and insure it has no melted spot facing the exhaust port gasket. If it does replace the housing and exhaust gasket. If not the housing should be good to re-use. Pay close attention to where all the parts go. You may have pure hell removing the key that is in the shaft. The key must be removed to remove the wear plate below the impeller. Only Yamaha cuts the tolerances so close that you can't get the friggin thing out. I had to drill out the last one I did. Lightly grease the wear plate and cup when you reassemble the pump, push down on the housing with one hand and twist the shaft clockwise with the other hand and the housing will fall down over the impeller.
good advice Charlie. I also had to drill out the dang keyway. It would have been pretty easy but I messed around with that for almost an HOUR!
