Just curious... I just got a new boat with the hpdi series 2, and my last boat had the 250 hpdi. Can anyone tell me what changed from the regular v-max hpdi and the newer series 2
Thanks

I think this was a great answer in another recent thread.

The Series2 is ECU updates and supposedly an additional piston ring in each cylinder making 3 rings per cylinder. The S2 will also have the updated oil pump that was changed out on many earlier models. The reality is if your engine has a MFG date stamped from Jan 07 forward you basically have all the updates in mapping, ECU and oil pump and have an identical engine to a Series2 minus the graphic. I was told this per Yamaha customer service when I called to see if I had the update on my 225 which I did from the factory. Overall there is no real change and it is the same engine. Some of the early problems were due to the oiling issues at varying throttle positions and lack of oil being delivered at times. I spoke to several techs including Hydro Tech and the claimed Âextra ring that was marketed does not exist and the pistons contain two rings like always. S2 and NonS2 engines call for the same part number for pistons/rings. Also Yamaha has always used Âforged pistons which is something else they noted in advertising the Series2. They never said there is a difference just that they they are forged. The only real difference is the oil pump update, ECU mapping and decal/graphic.

There is a mechanical difference but I believe its only the clearance was increased slightly on certain cyls. They run identical. Also if you have an older VZ just run it hard and they lived fine. It was always running in the midrange that killed them for some reason.
Supposedly they were being under oiled at midrange or as Legendman stated at varying throttle positions. The updated oil pump supposedly addressed this. ItÂs not like a light switch and changes were most likely rolled out on all late model Non Series2 that were built just before the Âofficial switch and are Series2 in every regard. If there is a ÂMechanical difference IÂm not sure what it is. Its reasonable Yamaha got all the changes in place including oil pump, ECU updates, fuel mapping changes and what ever else in place and then started to brand Series2 well after many were pumped out. This MFG process is typical and if there are problems the ÂSeries2 branded units donÂt take a hit in the public eye since problems will likely be caught with the units that do not say Series2. Auto MFGÂs do it all the time. ItÂs basically letting the public test your product since there is no time for them to do so. I know mine is one of the last run Series1 and a one month MFG date separated them.

Be ready to buy a lot of oil, they drink it.
Full pin they do like the oil. No worse than my 130 when skiing/tubing or on typical family outing. Since he had one already IÂm sure he realized that the first time he looked at the remote tank after a day at 6k.![]()
