I had read on one of the boards that Yamaha lies about the weight of their engines. Has anyone had first hand experience with the SHO and is it similar in weight to the HPDI?
Thanks

This subject has been hacked to death in the past. There is no conclusion because it is not practical to weigh one. It just becomes a pissing match between Merc and Yammy fans.
Either way, if it is not exactly 505 lbs then so what! The same issues may be the same for all. One thing for sure is that it is not a 635 lb Verado and it is close enough in weight to be comparable to any of the two strokes.
I wouldn't get hung up on the weight. Look at the other benefits/disadvantages of a four stroke and if it is not for you stay with a two stroke...
Less,
Couldn't agree more with your comments.. I was surprised to read how toxic the weight issues were from those insecure few towards the VmaxSHO's success.
All I know I have a 1675-1700 lb boat with a 505lb (until someone else can prove otherwise, who really cares) 200HP motor that can hit 73 mph plus in 90° plus temps and touch 74-75 mph in 70° temps. Can't wait to see if I can squeeze out another 1-2 mph in 40-50° temps. For SHO I'll find out this fall/winter.
All numbers posted above is full tournament load with 25-35 gallons of gas and 230lb driver.![]()

If you REALLY wanna get an idea of the weight go visit the boat dealer one day and go look at one in the crate. They have the weights on the crate because the freight company's require it before shipping. The crates themselves weigh between 60 - 120 lbs depending if they are wood or metal or both.
That much weight variance for the crate only adds fuel for the doubters and haters. To me I could give a rats a** what the motor weight is. The critical mass is performance and the SHO has done nothing but impress.![]()
I am not questioning performance, just weight. Weight is important to me as I fish shallow water and I dont care about 20lbs...but 100 would be an issue. I am looking to repower my boat going from an HPDI rather than a whole new rig. I know what my boat can do now, and a deeper draft would mean I need a different rig cause I cant give up more than an inch or two/

The Yamaha VmaxSHO Spec sheet has the SHO listed at 35lb lighter then the HPDI. Don't know how else to answer the question. Either you believe the numbers or you don't. I wish I could help you with exact numbers. Good luck. If you find something contrary to Yamaha's posted numbers let us know.![]()
Spec Sheet for your reference: http://www.yamaha-motor.com/ou...0.pdf
I do belive them. The merc guys probly made up the lied to create discussion like this. Repower or new boat... I will have a SHO next.![]()

I just put a 250 SHO on my TR-21 and its a great motor.
Rich
It is lighter than hpdi and if you factor in the oil tank of a 2 stroke it is definetly lighter than any direct injected eng made.
