I've read all the posts that I could find on this topic and replaced the poppet and water pump. PSI is 0-2 @ idle and 6-8 @ 4500 -5500 rpms. I didn't notice much of a difference after changing either the poppet or the pump. The engine isn't sounding an overheat alarm, but from everything I've read I should be getting 12 psi @ WOT minumum. Can anyone suggest what else can be done? I thought about the thermostat, but haven't looked at that yet. Help please!

I have the exact motor as you and mine runs low psi every summer from the warm water. You will see it some back in the next few months when the water cools. You could try another gauge just to be sure, but i would say if no alarm your ok.My last trip out would only get 10-12 psi at wot and 8 psi below that.
you probly read my post 2 weeks ago on this, and I'm still running the same numbers as you, water temp here has been mid 90s untill last week. If you see good numbers right off the trailer, I'd chaulk it to the water temp, everything in the motor is opened wide open, all the time. before the engine warms up, I can still hit 20psi+ for all of about 2 minutes that is

John I thought about that as I read some of your earlier comments and we live in the same area, but I was getting 12-14 psi last winter. The only time I got an overheat alarm was in Feb. when I ran in the mud and had to root out. This engine is on a bayboat do you think that could make a difference? Thanks for the help.BTW I tried my gauge outta my bassboat and it read correctly.

It's possible that your gauge has some debris in it. Try unhooking the line from it and from the motor and blowing it out with some air.If that does not help then the gauge could have froze during that cold weather we had last winter and be causing the problem.
The gauge outta my bassboat reads fine (my ole Rude will peg it @ 30 @ wot). We blew air through the line from the block to gauge and that didn't help either. Sunday both gauges read 1-2 at idle at the house. I'll keep my eye on it this fall and winter. I guess no alarm no problem. Thanks again for your help.
Due to the close quarters, when you reassemble your poppit valve it is easy to get it cocked at an angle and it won't straighten itself out but will go back together. It won't close completely and your water pressure will be low. You might check it again, but don't ask how I know. I would replace the spring when you do it also.
I turned my air compressor regulator down to 20 psi output, and blew into the hose at the engine. My pressure gauge read 20 right on the button. It is a quick way to check the guage.
FYI my dad took the bayboat today for the weekend and the the psi is 8 @ wot. We changed the water pump, the housing for the water pump, and the poppit valve. We also checked the gauge(s) in order to rule that out. Oh well no alarm no problems I guess...
