    Lower Unit Rebuild

My lower unit is fried (pinion gear destroyed) and I'm wondering just how hard it is to rebuild a lower unit yourself. Has anyone done this and what is the difficulty level?

I haven't done one in a long time, but it takes some special tools to get it apart and back togther, and if you are replacing the gears, it needs to be shimmed correctly.

Special tools are involved, and the critical issue is shimming the pinion correctly, which requires some tools generally owned only by mechanics and machinists. Buy a manual (some libraries have manuals) and read the section and then determine whether you are comfortable doing it. The parts are very high, sometimes you can buy a used or re-man unit cheaper than rebuilding.

Check with these people, you can't hardly rebuild one for what they want for a rebuilt unit. Had heard good things about them and if you have a problem, there warranty is great I have been told by guys who have used them.
