    Lower Unit Paint?

I have an 89 prov 150. I called Yamaha and they said us color rite paint. I called color rite and they said $18 for spray can. Told me to also get $16 primer and $16 clear cote. Does that sound right? Any other options? Thanks

just painted mine. primer, clearcoat, and paint remover from auto parts store range from $3-6 per can. i also got my paint there too. i had the dark blue lower unit and it was 2 colors from yamaha at $19 each. i found one close enough that you can't tell the difference. not sure of your color on an 89 but i think they have the light blue/grey color also in the auto parts stores. it might be gun barrell color, but not 100%.

Thanks and WOW that looks nice. That is prob more work and time than I was planning. I'm going to do a new post. Anyone use a stainless steel Skegshield? What about performance with one on?

just hit it with some gm 505 paint then clear it and your done, can do it in one day. had a buddy who had the skeg guard and hated it, never seemed to fit just right and seemed like it dragged in the water, he took it off, and just painted it..

I might try that. What is gm505? Is the brand or color?

its the color, its from o'riellys auto parts stores tho others may carry it, its a duplicolor paint, thats what i used, to do a "quickie" job i would just hit the lower unit area with a scotch pad or say 400-600 sandpaper, then use a good etching primer, also at autoparts store, and a clear coat..primer a few coats, then color a few coats, then clear it... and your good to go dont have to sand or anything if you dont want, and it will look fine...
can do it all in a day, i've done a few since doing mine for a few buddys, turn out great..

I wonder if that color will match my motor? Can you give me the order of the job again? You jump from clear to primer to paint and clear again. Thanks for the help.

    Re: Lower Unit Paint? (usabassin)

sorry, heres the steps for a quicky job.
its ruff up the lower unit with some 400-600 paper or a scotch pad, then spray the etching primer, a few coats, then you can sand the primer some if you want, or just start spraying the color, a few coats about 5-10 min between coats. let last coat dry all the way, then spray the clear coat, a few coats again with flash time between coats (5-10 min) lots of light coats are good..let dry, untape everything and your done..

and you can get everything at the local auto store oriellys for the duplicolor paint. the gm 50 m i think its called its a very dark dark blue with blue metal flake in it like the original paint. the original yamaha paint is a 2 step paint its basically a black paint that has a blue tint to it and not visible until the second step where it lays a transparent layer containing a blue flake, thats why at certain angles it looks black and then it will have a blue to it at other angles..the gm color they sell is very close and its just one step.
get two cans at least they are the small 8 oz cans..

bring it over ill knock it out for ya, im free today
