A buddy of mine has an 07 200 HPDI with less than 100 hrs on it and yesterday he left the ramp and ran appriamately 1/4 mile at 5000 rpms and the boat just dropped of the pad and the motor started pecking. Any ideas on what could cause this?

Does it continue to run? or does it stall? If it continues to run what happens next?

Never heard of a motor making a pecking noise![]()
Can you describe this pecking? Does it sould like a wookpecker?
It did continue to run but noise is the same. He did not try to open it up, just idled back in.
Noise sounds like a bad lifter tapping on a small block chevy.
Hope that it is still under warranty.
Just a guess but it may be the high pressure fuel pump which cost about $1000 plus labor to install. But that is just a guess and needs to be put on the laptop.
By saying "pecking", could that mean "knocking"? If so, check the compression. I'd also suggest not using the boat until your friend gets this problem resolved. Running lean isn't good for the engine.
That's a bad noise. Pull all the plugs and look for aluminum on any of them, and check compression, and hope for the best.
Well, the verdict is in. The motor had 116 hrs on it and the #5 piston was melted, so a new top in will be here Monday, Yam wants blown top end to investigate problem.
