I have read numerous threads on BBC on whether or not Yammie 2 strokes are history. Seemed like this was an emissions thing.
I did a little internet research and came up with the following in regards to the emission ratings:
HPDI are 2 Star, Yammie 4 Strokes are 3 Star
Opti's are 3 Star, Verado's are 2 Star
Etech's are 3 Star
There are some exceptions to above, for example the 150/175/200 Opti's are only 2 star.
When I first started reading about this I was sure Yammie was doing this because of the oil consumption on the HPDI's. Mine uses more oil than my old 2.5 liter 200 Merc carb, but I am not sure how that can be the case when you look at the Verado rating?? Its the same as HPDI.
Another thing that seems odd is in the past when outboard manufactures came out with new technology there was always a period of time when both products where made simultanously. Example carb and EFI where made simultaneously, EFI a DI etc... Seems odd they would kill the 2 strokes without some time for the new engines to catch on.
One more thing, apparently the Carb ratings are measured by manufacturer in regards to their entire product line and are averaged some sort of way . This means that they can still sell 2 star engines as long as the average for the product line meets some minimum.
