    Need yalls mechanic knowledge!!!

Posted this in the yamaha section with no respose:

I have a yamaha v-max 150 2002 modle. I took it out today and at idle ONLY it sneezes really bad, sometimes dies. I bought the boat about 2 months ago and have not had this problem until today. I need to know what to check and how to fix it PLEASE! At WOT it runs fine and runs fine at midrange. This problem is only at idle. I have ran seafoam through it today and that didnt help, traced fuel line for leaks and there isnt any. Checked fuel filter and it was fine. Primer bulb stays hard when running. Plugs look good.

There were a few things I did prior to taking it out. yesterday i changed my impellor. I also bought citgo 2 stroke oil, bc that is all academy had when i went. This is my first time running this oil, mabey that has something to do with it? Mabey bad gad?? See I cant understand how bad oil OR bad gas would be the problem bc it does it only at idle, nothing else. If I had bad gas/oil I would think it would running funny at all throttle ranges. I have never messed with anything on the carburator either, all factory/previous owner settings. I would like to get this thing running this week, but I might need some instructions on things to try bc I have checked everything i can think to check! And DOUG/GUNRUNNER no need to hate on the yammy ...help me out guys!!! Thanks!

Is it only when cold idle or it does it after the engine warms up? My 150 carb v max was very tempremental when cold. If it does it warm also sounds like the carbs need to be adjusted.

First thing, do not run anything but Yamalube for oil in your motor. Hydro Tec recommends using it, so that's good enough for me. Second, every other tank you need to run either Sea Foam or Ring Free thru it. I would guess the sneezing is caused by the heat and humidity.

I'm having the same problem with my '05. Last several times it don't want to idle. But when on plane and running, all is fine. Changed plugs, use seafoam, water seperator filter, and gas and still. Think i'll be bringing it to the shop next week.

damit doug, why you gotta rub it in! I though about calling you up yesterday to see if you wanted to meet me at mcdonalds so you could slap the piss out of me for not buying it! O well.......I like my skeeter now dont get me wrong, I just have bad luck. On second thought I did the champ a favor bc It would probably be on the bottom of the lake if i bought it with my luck.........

I read somewhere about a lean sneeze at idle. Your idle mixture might need to be adjusted to richen it up. I think you would turn your idle mixture screws out(counter clockwise) about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn and see if that helps. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I'm not an outboard mechanic but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

my only concern with this advice is WHY DID IT JUST START ALL THE SUDDEN???????????? I thin to prevent a potential meltdown i would have it check by someone competent, remember outboards oil is carried in the gas. if its lean on fuel its lean on oil!

Just an idea-but when I had a carbed motor-it was important that the motor be level for it to idle properly. I learned that every time I started it and when I would shut down to fish, I went ahead a trimmed it to where it was as level as I could get it and it took care of my idle probs. Before that, I adjusted the idle and everything.

Maybe the different oil is burning a little different causing it to think that it is lean leaner than before and he might have been borderline before.

Jacob, might you be able to call the previous owner and ask if it ever happened to them.I had a 75 HP Suzuki that did that when i would run regular gas.Started using Super and it quit.I ran Walmart oil for 5 yrs until i sold the boat so i know it was NOT an oil issue for me.

If you know how to clean the oxygen sensor do it now. There is a procedure on the Yamaha forum on how to. You should do this about every 30 hours. There is a defect with the engine that will cause a lean condition when this sensor gets carbon buildup on it. The leaning out of the engine will cause it to blow. Two of my friends had this happen, fortunately under warranty. This is also why Ring Free is so important on these motors as it helps keep the carbon deposits to a minimum and prevent the sensor from malfunctioning.

I have a copy of the procedure in PDF format. I can send it if you PM me your email. I have done this on one friends motor and it is not that difficult but you may need a replacement gasket if it tears when removing the sensor.

I don't believe the carb 150's have a oxygen sensor.
