    2007 150 vmax starting issues

    hey guys,

I am having a hard time getting my engine to fire up first thing. Once it does start then there is no issues. This has been a problem since I first bought it and the dealer made an adjustment to the choke plates but I am still having trouble. Whenever I turn the key it seems like it just won't turn over.

    Thank you,
    Randy

How's the charge in your cranking battery? That'd be the first thing I would check.

Are you choking it? Does the choke work?

After reading many reports from many other readers, I use the manual choke every time on my 150 VMAX carb. It is much easier to start the very 1st time. I do not even worry about trying to use the electric choke. Pull the manual choke, turn the engine over and it cranks. Most of the time I can push the choke in before the engine dies and it will keep running. If not, push the choke in and turn the key and it is ready to run. I am sure that I could work on adjusting electric choke, but the manual choke works too well. On mercury and evinrude engines, I always used the electric choke, but on the Yamaha, I just went with the experience of so many here on BBC (manual choke).

what is the manual choke? i push the key in when I start the engine. I can hear the clicking coming from the engine, which I think is the choke plates moving.

The manual choke is on the engine, just below the cowling. It will be very close to where the cables enter the motor. You will pull out to choke and push in to release the choke. It manulally moves the levers on the carbs, to choke the motor. The electronic choke is supposed to do the same thing by actuating a solenoid to pull down a lever that will operate the choke. The manual choke on Yamaha carbs just seems to work much better. Let us know if you can not find the manual choke.

I don't own one, but have read many post that these motors are cold blooded and many people have found certain routines that work for them. If I remember some of them said to prime the bulb with the motor trimmed down and to use the manual choke as said above.

if it's not turning over you likely have a low battery...or dead one. when mine gets low the trim sounds a little different but still moves. the motor won't turn over though.

here's my starting routine. it works for me and i have the same motor but 05 model.

    1) Trim motor level
    2) Sqeeze Bulb till firm
    3) Pull manual choke
    4) Turn key
    5) Push manual choke back in

I had the same problem when mine was new. I even took mine back telling the dealer the motor was broken. He told me the motor had to be level or very close when you squeeze the bulb. My electric choke has never worked right. I don't mind using the manual choke and it always works so I don't complain. After the first crank.....she's good all day.

Like someone else said......The manual choke is a black "square" on the lower left side of the front of the motor (if you are in the boat looking at the motor). It pulls out about an inch or so to choke.

let us know how it goes.

I have the same motor. Here is my routine and it works on 2 or 3 crank

    1. Pump the bulb........doesn't matter engine position
    2. Turn key to "ON" position and push the key in to choke, do it about 5 times for about 1 second each. You should be able to here the gas moving to the engine.
    3. Hold down the key and turn to start.

Do this about 2-3 times and she should fire up.

If its acting like its not turning over then its not a choke issue, its a battery issue.
