just changed impeller and I have a wierd problem

I just changed the water pump impeller on my '05 225 hpdi like I do yearly. Upon getting it back together, I have a strange problem. It will shift in and out of forward and reverse smoothly, but sometimes I have to move the prop to get it to go into gear. Sometimes it will go into forward and reverse, sometimes forward only, sometimes reverse only, and sometimes niether. If I move the prop, it will go into at least one gear fine. I reinstalled the lower unit in forward, neutral, and reverse and have the same problem. Could I be one spline off on the shift shaft? I have not run the boat yet, so maybe the water turning the prop will make this problem unnoticeable, but I am worried. Any ideas?

It is normal to have to move the prop to put it in gear. Some times the gears line up and some times you have to move the prop to get them to line up.

Thanks for calming me down, Can't say I've ever gone from forward to reverse a bunch of times in the garage. Will run it tomorrow, hopefully it is all good.

Ditto on having to rotate the prop to get it into gear, but never force the gear shift lever without the motor running.

Always changed my old evinrude myself (never had this problem), first time for my yammie. Guess BBC is great for ignorance.
