    Cold Starting Yamaha

I have a 2004 HPDI Vmax 300HP Yamaha that is giving me trouble with cold starts. The first time I fire it off for the day, it will barely idle and usually dies when I give it ANY gas in neutral. I can put it in gear and it will idle very rough in gear for a few minutes until it warms up. For the rest of the day, it runs perfect once warmed up, will start and run in neutral just fine. The engine never misses when running above idle speed. Any ideas before I go spend $$$ at the dealer??

I have changed plugs, 10 micron fuel filter and use Seafoam regular. I even tried mix the Seafoam heavy to try and clean up and carbons. ?????

Are you pumping the bulb before you try to start it. You should pump it till it is hard. To my knowledge you should not really have a major cold starting issue with a fuel injected motor.

Yes....I pump the bulb until it is hard. Something is wrong, just havent figured it out. It definitely will not idle cold and dies when you give it any throttle. No choke on a fuel injected engine.

My vmax is a carb motor and it always starts right up, theres no way your fuel injected $20,000 motor should take more than a quick twist of the key to start.

It starts everytime with the push of a button. But I can not give it any gas or it will die until it warms up. I just wondered if anyone else has have this problem with a HPDI motor and had it fixed?

same here i have a 08 300 if it is cold say 40 or lower same thing i have to put it in gear soon as it starts or it will die and sometimes the only way to get it to restart is to trim the motor out of the water or it will just spin over and flood out if its warm out no problems i was told maybe cold start sensor going to take it in after owners tournament

fishn4lips, did you ever get this figured out? I am going through the same exact thing. It wasn't like this a couple of weeks ago. It just started. I thought plugs but I switched then out and got nothing. It is almost like a cylinder isn't firing at lower RPM or that the cylinders are shutting down correctly.

    Re: Cold Starting Yamaha (knightsae)

I see some of you guys are pumping, or priming the bulb on yours, but I never pump mine. I back it in the water, hit the key, wait about 8-10 seconds of the pumps to quit running and it fires off. You really shouldn't have to pump the bulb on a fuel injected motor, or at least on the ones that I've had you didn't. In fact, the only time that I pumped the bulb on my HPDI, it actually made it hard to start and idled rough for about the first min or two. If I don't pump the bulb and just let the pumps do their job, it fires off in about 1-2 seconds and idles like a champ!
