Any hope for my 1988 140

    Guys,

I got the call this morning that my 22' C-Hawk was capsized in her slip this morning. The motor is completely submerged. Boat US said that they would have someone "pickle and flush" the motor and it would be fine. In the next breath they said it was probably a Total Loss. The only thing I can say is thank goodness we did not drop our insurance. We considered it after Boat US raised our rates 80% in one year after Isabel.

Is there any hope???? They funny thing is that I was waiting for a replacement helm from Teleflex so I could pull the boat. It came last night........

Is it worth having it fixed?

    Thanks!

    Tim

As long as the motor is still submerged you are OK. When they pull it out IMMEDIATLY have the motor serviced DO NOT wait 2 days. AT minimum if the shop cannot do it remove all plugs and pull the kill switch spin the motor over to remove all of the H20 from the block! Spray WD-40 into the cylinders and re-install the plugs, disconnect the fuel line at the motor with out starting it! Pull all the carb drain plugs and let them drain out. Take the garden hose and wash down the motor inside and out. Drain the fuel tank and Oil tank (if equiped) dispose of properly. Fill with fresh fuel and oil. Replace fuel filter and H20 separator (if Installed). Connect fuel hose to motor and prime bulb flush carbs and re-install carb drains. Connect to muffs and the motor should light right off! The ticket is to IMMEDIATLY service the motor DO NOT Delay. Good luck CM

    Thanks CM!

That is exactly why the boat is going to stay in the water over night. The local shop who is going to service it said that they could not get to it until tomorrow. Tow Boat US is going the salvage work and they will tow it to the yard on Middle River. I'll have my trailer there and they will move it right into the shop. The mechanic seems to really be on the ball. Let's hope he is.

I am still trying to figure out how the boat ended up on it's starboard side and it snapped the port side spring line!

I just want to be sure the motor is done right if they salvage it. The insurance company told me that I have about $6000 to work with on the boat and motor.

    Thanks Again!

Sorry to hear about what happened. But I have a question. How did a 22 footer manage to capsize in the slip over night? I don't remember it being windy last night and even during bad storms, I don't ever remember it getting that bad in Middle river. I'm assuming you have your boat there. I keep a boat down there and it was in the water druing Hurrican Fran and it faired will. With your spring line being broken, I almost thing there is a saboteur in our mist.

BTW, are you taking the motor to intercoastal Marine? I've only purchased a few things there but the guy and gal there were extremely helpful.

Intercoastal is where it is going!!!!

Yeah, a 4,500 lb. 22 footer. The boat is sitting on the starboard side in four feet of water in the slip. It is in the main stem of Middle River across from Riverwatch, just past Dark Head Cove.

It does make you wonder. The port side does face to the NW so the Pilot house would catch some wind, but how much? The doctor who owns the house where the boat is said the boat was fine Sunday afternoon. I was there on Monday and everything was fine.

The one thing I will say is that Boat US has been really great. The surveyor is set to evaluate the boat after the motor is pickled Thursday.

    Thanks,

    Tim

DO you have a current where you slip at? In our area the Maurice river has about a 6 kt current. Once the boat fills with water over it goes. We are a CHawk dealer and have never had one sink. What model is it? Opps I see its has a piolt house so you must have athe 222 Sport. I can not see this boat sinking with a 140 on it. I can see if it had a 225hp on the stern.

    johnrude,

I did not think it would sink either...... I pulled it out in five foot rollers right before Hurricane Isabel and the boat is solid!!!!!!!

There is some current, but mostly wakes. The river has no speed limit on it during the week and it gets pretty crazy out there. However, I don't think a tanker wake would have flipped her.

The problem is two fold......Only duck hunters are left and they are not running anything big enough to capsize the boat. The boat was dry as of Monday.

As I said before my port side springline was snapped! The salvage crew was dumbfounded when I spoke with them this afternoon. We'll see if they can determine the cause after they raise her.

Oh the boat is the Old C-Hawk 22' Deluxe Cabin. That little 140 purred like a kitten an would start in the coldest of weather.

Any more input would be appreciated.

BTW........The plug was in the boat!
