    2000 V MAX 225 SURGING

I have a 2000 225 v max that i canot find out what is making it jump up and down about 100-200 rpms at different speeds going down the lake. I cleaned the o2 sensor, fuel filters ,plugs, voltage regulator/rectifire. I was in a car wreck and fractured my neck and wound up on disablity which just deos pay for my insurance so i cant afford to pay 90 dollars an hour to have it checked but i am able to test things . I hate riding down the lake with a skipping motor so if some one can tell me what i can check it would be a big help.
    Thanks

    Re: 2000 V MAX 225 SURGING (cnorris)

My tach says that my RPMs are doing that...but they really aren't, which seems to be a common problem with it. I'll be idling along and the tach will jump up to 5000+ RPMs although the engine never changes sound. Tap on the guage and back to normal.

Not sure what the actual problem might be as my tach 01 225 as well does this, but when it does it, the motor doesn't change sounds at all. I have been running a steady 5K on the tach and see mine jump to 6200+ and stay for a second with no change on the hotfoot at all, then it comes back down to 5K. I think maybe a tachometer problem, but hasn't done it in a while for me.

If you can feel the surge while driving then its not a tac problem. Instal new plugs, check plug wires and boots and do a spark gap check. Maybe a lose ground wire somewhere? How about the low pressure fuel pumps?
One more thing...there is a shift cut out switch next to the shift rail and if the gear shift cable is out of adjustment its possible that is cutting out couple cylinders momentarily. You can pivot the shift rail with your finger while the engine is running on hose and you’ll know what I’m talking about. This switch is useless, you can unplug it.

You can here the motor change sounds when it does this and it does sound like a cylinder cuts off and on for just a second. I will try to find the switch and disconect it. i will let you know if it fixes it.
    Thanks Alot

Hey listen, I had the same issue with my 2004 hpdi 225. If your battery is not fully charged it will cause this problem. I didnt believe it either but I bought a new battery and solved my problem. Does it stop doing it after you run for a while? If you replace the battery make sure it is at least 1000 cca. These big hpdi's need the power under throttle. Good luck

    Re: 2000 V MAX 225 SURGING (shearwater1)

Thanks for the input but , i have tried 2 brand new of the biggest batteries i could find. And mine is not a hpdi if that matters. Iam going to add seafoam when i run some of the gas out ,right now its full. I also noticed that my oil stop is set at least .040 but it would be my luck i would blow up the motor if i set it at .020 like the book says.
    Thanks

A leaking fuel lift pump will cause this. May want to take it off, look at the back and see if it is wet.

Ensure to disconnect throttle linkage and back out idle screw before making any adjustments to oil pump!!

I Have a 2001 225 OX66 AND HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TACH jumping around with the RPM's , However the engine did not sound as if RPM'S changed. Ichanged out the voltage regulator, and that took care of my problem. Maybe that could be your problem? Hope this helps. Hank
