    Frog Fishing?

Went to the lake last night from 5-9. Started throwing a frog in some broad leaf grass mats ( don't know what it's called) that have been holding fish for some time now. I dedicated the evening to primarily throwing the frog, but had ZERO hookups. I was using a SPRO Bronzeye Frog and had some real good ones come up and take it down, but still couldn't get a hook into them. I was using heavy mono which I'm sure may have affected my hookup, but not to catch any? WTF? The SPRO bait is a fine looking frog, but if it won't hook up it's going in the garbage. Do you think that braided line would have made that much of a difference. I even took the pliers to the hooks and bent them out some and still no luck. OBTW, I wasn't taken it from them to soon. I let the bait dissappear, and the rod would even load up with the weight of the fish, but they wouldn't stay buttoned up. I did manage to catch a few on a LC G-Splash with a 3 lb 17" being the best fish. What a shame! The fish that were trying to eat the frog were 4+ fish. Any suggestions?

    Re: Frog Fishing? (beetle)

I had that same problem before I went to braid when using the SPRO frog. Mono has/had to much strech in the line to allow good hook ups. Since going to braid my hook ups went up but sometimes fish just hit it and not take it.

If you decide to throw them out, throw them my way!!!!

The fish may not have been actually wanting to eat your bait. Retrieve, color, action, something may have had them thrown off that it wasnt real.

I think that a frog isnt always imitating a frog.
I went night fishing a couple weeks back. SHAD WERE EVERYWHERE!!! Theyd be flippin right by the boat. One thing I noticed with the spro bronze eye frog I was fishing was that it sounded a lot like a shad flippin. Another thing I noticed is that a good hard pull sounded a lot like a bass blasting a shad on the surface. I got 3 or 4 strikes and hooked with 2. The 2 I missed missed the bait.

Another thing, those bass may have been tryin to kill it and knock it under the water, not neccasarily tryin to eat it with the initail strike. You throw a senko or something back up there when you missed a fish?

I have had similar results with a SPRO frog as well...........I still think there a decent frog but it seems there bodies might be just a tad too stiff for my liking. I went back to my Scum Frogs and had much more hookups with them

Ive never had much problem with spro frogs. IDK why, but I just seem to have a pretty good hookup rate with them. Fish I miss I can almosy always associate to something I did wrong, waited too long, didnt wait long enough, etc

Of course I always have a follow up bait handy. I think I just need to use braid.

I take them out of the package and squeeze them till they are a little softer.

I have a sumo frog and a scum frog and I'd say the sumo is softer than the scum frog.

The braid could of helped for sure but you still should have got one in the boat on mono. I know when I was at Toho last year we pulled up next to Aaron Martens and he was tying on the Reaction Innovations Swamp Donkey. I asked if he liked that frog better then others and he said he thought it was superior to the other frogs. I carry them in the shop and have thrown a few but I can't honestly say it is better or not. I know the hooks and hook tie are at a different angle from each other instead of being in a straight line pull.

I sometimes think missing fish on a frog is just inherant problems.

I use the Spro Frog and love it. I do throw it on braid though & use a heavy rod. You gotta let them have it a second or two before you set the hook. Go to braid and I'll be you see a major improvement. If you still hate the Spro frog after that I have a good home for them. Another frog that I have had good results with is the Snag Proof Tournament Frog.

Braid and don't even think aobut setting the hook until you "feel" the hit.
