PAINTING A LOWER UNIT

Can anyone recommend a competent place to have a Yamaha lower unit repainted? The previous owner of the boat had an aftermarket nose put on and the paint job is pealing. I guess the unit could be shipped off but I would prefer local in Georgia if possible.

I would clean it of real good with a lite solvent after sanding lightly with 400 or 800 grit. Then I use appliance epoxy paint. I t holds up very well against the conditions. The more coats the better.
Spray the coats lightly and evenly and allow time to dry in between coats. If you don't the undercoats seem to soften from the newly sprayed coats. So take your time. I'll spray as many as 10 coats if your looking for a really smooth finish wait a day or so lightly sand it with 1200 grit "lightly" wipe clean and spray a coat or to of clear epoxy or enamel .

Anything that comes in contact with sand on a regular base's is going to wear after time its just a matter of how thick to how long.Repeat before it wears all the way through .Regular maintenance.

This works for me .So its just my two cents. someone else may have a better procedure in which case ,my mind is opened.

from what i have heard from more than one person is that for some reason the paint you can buy from a dealer and so on will not stick to the LU for some reason.
heard this from my deaer as well as another dealer.........dont know if Yamaha bakes it on diffrent or uses some other kind of pain than what they sell seprate or what........just what i have heard

In your part on the usa you should be able to get it at Menards, Lowes, Sherwin Willams or any paint store, you may even be able to get it at wally world back there

If the paint shore does not have it in stock they can order for you I'm Sure

My Skeeter Dealer told me to use Mercury Black. I did and it looks great. Perfect match.

http://www.low-h2o.com paints them and he does use a heat lamp to bake it on the surface...it will stay on better than any thing you can buy or do at home..... I think the gm #XXXXXXXXXX paint matches I have seen the part # on the site here

I painted an aluminum bass boat five years ago and it still looks new. I sanded it down, primed it with an automotive etching primer and shot a couple coats of a high quality auto urethane. I don't think anything out of a spray can or bottle will be there for long without a quality aluminum primer. The auto paint store can match your color.

Dupli-color GM-505M is the right color...It will stick, if you prep it right and use a zinc chromate primer to etch the bare aluminum...You also must lightly sand any areas you plan on painting that have the OEM paint still on it, or it will not stick... You should topcoat it with the Dupli-Color clear top coat to get the right color and to give it a good hard finish...
You can also use Plasti-Kote Truck&Sport Utility paint in #1533 Dark Shadow Blue Metallic...

Just about any competent body/paint shop can do it. You'll need to provide them with the information on what to use. My local body shop repainted mine back in 05. They took all the old paint off, applied all the Yamaha paint steps using their process and paints, even put on a coat of urethane on top, then baked it on. They actually looked up the Yamaha paint process through one of their online deals. It looked awesome and the paint was tougher than from the factory.

It cost me a pretty penny, but the previous paint job applied by hand with a spray can simply peeled off from water friction and also from where the transom saver touched the lower unit.
