    lower unit noise

...Just installed a factory new magnum lu on my 98ym 225 vindicator. When I spin the prop it sounds like you can hear the gears meshing as the prop spins, almost like there is no oil in the lu.....I dont hear this on other props I spin at the ramp, this cant be good.. ..Now what????.....<>rob<>..

Pop the bottom drain screw and see if any fluid tries to come out, if so you got juice in there. Disconnect your shift cable at the motor and try it again, move the shifter linkage back and forth out of gear and spin the prop with your foot, PULL THE KILL SWITCH. Then back to neutral if it still makes noise the shift rod heigth may be out of adjustment they can and should have checked this prior to install.

    Re: lower unit noise (RUSTY63)

the 2 LU i have spun on the 225HO e-tec , both made a sound SIMILAR to shift rod adjustment, but was different. my lightning does the same thing , but is normal. my buds were both worried about it, but i have not had a prob with mine for over 2 years. and for someone knows what shift out of adj sounds like , ....you can tell that's not it...............now if you installed a NEW BRP magnum , then adjustment may be necessary, but if shifting is correct (as my buds both are) its probably normal....JMHO

...It is definetly not the shift shaft adjustment, (been there done that)..The fluid is full and has been replaced. It almost sounds like a berring noise. In neutral, what spins?? carrier berring, prop shaft, forward gear? anywhere else this noise could come from??...<>rob<>

    Re: lower unit noise (bass-ackwards)

When the driveshaft spins, everything except propshaft, clutch dog and bearings in propshaft bearing carrier will spin.

If you spin the propshaft, the gears, driveshaft and their related bearings do not spin.

I know you said you've been down the shift-shaft adjustment road, but (and this is a very important but), when you installed this Magnum gearcase on your 1998 motor, was the Magnum shiftrod installed too? The Magnum has different shift geometry which requires a special shiftrod. If the original shift rod was re-used it could be part of the problem.

I'm with Rusty & CM, who installed it? I would also add that adjusting the shiftrod on the Magnum requires a "special touch" - the shift detent in the gearcase doesn't have the definate "locked in nuetral" feeling of some of the other style gearcases...

Re: lower unit noise (John from IL)

J...The unit was installed with the mag shiftrod, but it was bolted up and adjusted by a mostly mercury shop! . with a lot of omc customers ...The shifts are smoth and clean to N-F & N-R. If a "special touch" is needed to dial it in, then, if I disconnect the linkage under the block, the noise should go away when I move the shiftrod. Would that prove or disprove anything??. It just sounds too much like a carrier bearing ...R

If it will make you feel any better then pull the carrier and check the bearings or if you are uncomfortable doing that have the shop that did the install check out the carrier.

Is this a noise like the bearings in the carrier sound dry?

    Re: lower unit noise (bass-ackwards)

Are you hearing a light "clicking" sound as you turn the prop in neutral, or is it more of a low pitched "growl"?

    Re: lower unit noise (RUSTY63)

One thing you can do is pull the prop and spin the shaft and see if the noise is still there. If if goes away, maybe just a little bit of paint hitting the collar on the LU. You should have a 1 year on it anyway. Run it untill it blows and have it fixed. Sorry wish I could be more help but it appears normal.
