Yet another couple of trim questions (electrical)

    Hello All,
First, let me thank you all for a very informative forum. I have been "trolling" through this forum since this spring when I bought a boat with twin 200 HPDI's.
    The questions:

    1) I am having trouble with the twin trim and tilt switch (the one on the throttle arm) on a 704 remote controlbox. It had been working off and on, but now completely failed (will not work in either up or down). The individual port and stb switches mounted on the box still work, however they don't work all the time. I have a copy of the wiring diagram. My thoughts and questions:
    a) I don't think that it is the relays as both motors tilt on the individual switches.
    b) Could it be the switch itself? They seldom fail in both directions. I suspect it may be the hot "red" hot lead. Str ange though, that the red lead is routed to the port engine. Anybody have a similar problem?
    c) Could it be the harnesses to the engines?
    2) I recently changed out my tachs. The port engine trim guage is not working. I swapped harnesses with the stb engine and the guage works fine. I will try to meter the leads as specified in Seloc. Is it unusual for the trim sender just to crap out?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Many thanks

Re: Yet another couple of trim questions (Sprokit)

Awfully quiet here. Everyone must be fishing.
Well, on problem #1, I traced the problem to the switch. I bought a replacement p/n 704-82563-31 ($62.00....am I stupid or what?). Now, I am having a heck of a time getting the controller cover off. I removed the 4 phillips heads in each of the corners and have tried to pry it off, but it won't budge. I don't want to break the d#$%* thing. Is there a trick to this or am I missing any other fasteners? I note on the parts diagram that there are stopper plates under the cover.
    Many thanks for the help.

Re: Yet another couple of trim questions (Sprokit)

Hello Joe, I wish I could help ya but I am going through the same problem myself.
Now I can only tell you what my Ranger Dealer told me today when I took my boat in for the same problem (Or near same problem).

The dealer told me that the problem is most likely the trim solenoid that is housed in the motor compartment. Basically they told me that the solenoid is bad and will have to be replaced. From what I understand the cost will be around 150.00 installed, maybe a little less.

If you use the trim on the throttle can you hear a clicking sound in the motor?
I assume you are having the same problem I am because you mention that the pt and stb switches dont work all the time either.

My problem started out the same way yours did. I also have a Yamaha 200 HPDI.

Welcome aboard, this is the best site on the net. Hopefully some one will chime in and give you some good troubleshooting advice, but from what it sounds like you may be replacing the same part I am now. Good Luck!

Re: Yet another couple of trim questions (nullster)

Thank you for the reply. I went through the whole system with a ohm/volt meter. There is no question that the twin trim switch on the throttle is bad. I could barely get any continuity. I also jumped the green/red and blue/red leads and the engines came up and down with no problems. So I will try to replace the switch if I can figure out how to get the binnacle cover off. It was suggested on another web site that there are some tabs that need to be pressed. I'll be darned if I can find them though.
I do think that I will be replacing a solenoid/relay on the older of the two engines soon (2001). That is the engine with the trim indicator problem. So I will work the relay when I fix the sender problem.
Again, thanks for the info. And you are right. This is a great site. Nice and knowledgable folks.
