    Considering 250 VMAX OX66 EFI

I'm considering a boat with a 01 250 VMAX OX66 EFI. I hear I will have a hefty gas bill. I'll still be able to use regular, right? Does this thought qualify me for the state hospital? Anymore feedback on this engine would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It's a strong motor and should run pretty fast. This means you will get there sooner and the motor wont run as long. This will "save" you gas.

It's not that bad on my boat.... It's been flawless for me...

I don't think you can go wrong with the OX-66 motors. Have a 200 and love it.

I have a 2002 250 OX66 and I love it. I haven't had any trouble with it since I bought it, (knock on wood) and I beat the hell out of it everytime I go out. just use RingFree or that other stuff everyone talks about and you will be fine, Great Motor!!!

That is what I have found on my 225 OX66. If I cruise at 3500-4000 rpm, it isn't bad on gas at all. When you run wide open, it'll drink some gas. They are a reliable, strong running motor. If you do need parts or maintenance items, they are generally pretty easy to find.

I checked my fuel economy last fill up and found it to be just over 2 mpg overall.

I agree. At 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, gas mileage is very acceptable. Just like any motor, full throttle will send you to the bank more often. Two mechanics told me they would rarely see me with this motor.

Thanks to all forthe great information!

Is it possible for a Yamaha tech to hook up and get engine hours and other good information from this motor?

I did have it checked out but the tech there said there wasn't a way on this motor to get hrs unless someone installed a separate hrs meter.

I know they are the pros but I had heard differently. Just verifying.

Re: Considering 250 VMAX OX66 EFI (reddrooster)

The tech is right. No way to check the hours unless a meter was installed when new. The HPDI model can be checked, Not the OX66 motors. I have an hour meter built into my multi function yamaha digital gauges. That was a new feature on the 2003 model gauges. The did not offer that pre 2003.

Just make sure the compression is within 5 lbs or so betwen each cyl.

    Re: Considering 250 VMAX OX66 EFI (21XDC)

What should the compressionnumbers be for a 1999 Yamaha OX66 be?

I know they should be within a few pound sof each other, but what range?

    Thanks.

    Re: Considering 250 VMAX OX66 EFI (bogie47)

I think 105-115 depending on the gauge etc.... It's most important that they are close. Not how much per.

The numbers came back as all 85-90. Seems low, but they are close together.

    Any thoughts?

Every gauge reads different... I think I would try another gauge, But the compression is probably fine.

Re: Considering 250 VMAX OX66 EFI (kensafishin)

I checked the fuel economy on my last fill up. According to the Yamaha trip meter, I had gone around 85 miles. It took 42 gallons to fill it up. That comes up to just over 2 mpg. That is varied speeds, mostly 3500-4000 rpm with a few w.o.t. runs. I can definately live with that. My Yamaha speedo actually reads very close to the GPS, so my miles travelled isn't exact, but it is very close.

Like we stated already, the OX isn't all that bad until you run fast.

Have a 97 OX66 250hp EFI on a 25ft Grady-White that makes weekly 40-50mile runs offshore for tuna all summer long.

Runs great! 110-115 compression test beginning of last summer. OX66 is one of the best motors ever built by any manufacture. I burn 13-16gph @ 4,200-4,400rpm which works out to 1.85 - 2.4mpg depending on load. My boat weights 6,500lbs before fuel, gear and passengers and she goes very nicely with my single 250hp OX66.

Good luck in your search - Yami is a good choice.
