250 HPDI problems!! What do you think?

I have a 2004 250 HPDI, this past weekend fished the BFL at Lake Norman and it started acting up. Was very very hard to start in the mornings, push the gas in N and would die, would only run 4600 RPM and had a terrible time planing out. Took it to Denver Marine on Fri, they ran a compression check and one cylinder had around 79 the others were find around 110 i think is what he said. They put some engine tune in all cylinders and said it might help. It didn't. So I fished the TX and now have to take it back and they are going to tear it down to see what it wrong. What does this sound like???

Ring sticking, or abnormal wear? Could have been due to carbon build-up, could have been due to a lean condition, normally associated with a fuel delivery problem. Have you always ran some type of anti-carbon fuel additive (like ring free, or sea foam)? It could be a lot of things. I hope they get you back up & running quickly, and with as little trouble as possible.

yea sounds like a fuel flow problem..don't run it till you get it checked..if its a fuel flow restriction, you will burn it up, then your talking new powerhead, and big bucks..

Sounds alot like my 2003 250HPDI...ended up being a blown engine (one cylinder lost compression, but was still running, but not great). Got new powerhead (and all maintenance items including plugs) replaced under warranty no cost to me, except a new larger battery. See my thread "250 HPDI knocking noise" for more details.

Is yours still under warranty? Hope it's something simple like an injector or fouled plug! Good luck!

sounds bad, hope it's still under warranty. I have read and been told that the 250 Hpdi's have been losing the #5 cylinder for some reason. Not sure if it's true though. Good luck.

Well its not under warranty but I called Yamaha and they are sending new powerhead, oil pump, fuel pump, water pump and fuel filters. The best part is that they are taking care of the cost. Now that is customer service. The motor only had 70 hours, so they should help out. Not sure what number it is, but the cylinder that was bad is the middle port side.

Good for you. Are they taking care of the labor too?

Also, they forced the dealer to break-in my new powerhead under strict guidelines, but that was warranty.

The root cause of many of the failures has been inadequate break-in procedure, so they have changed it substantially. Did they mention anything about break-in?

Yeah, the dealer said they would break it in for me, I think Yamaha has went to that guideline. Hey, I'm not complaining. Also about the labor, the dealer said all I would be liable for was the new spark plugs, so I guess that mean labor to, I hope so.

I'm sure it includes labor or you would know by now.

This is great to happen now and get it over with, especially on their tab. Down the road it may have been questioned more. You will have a good-as-new engine!

Hopefully the new break-in procedure will give both of our "new" engines a long life! I know that's what Yamaha is counting on!
